This chansonnier paints a wonderful portrait into medieval times, and its worldview.
Marcabru's body of work is seducingly deceptive and contradictory, full of beautiful imagery from the natural world whilst thematically always despise love, and how its pursuit inevitably ends in cuckoldry, heartbreak, ruin or damnation.
In that same vein, his favorite choice of words are "Youth", "Joy" and "Cunt", endlessly repeating in all his chansons... Which probably tells you all about his society, and perhaps of the traumatic origin of his art.
