Blood of The Dragonfly

Rate this book
While dangling a fishing hook from his flat bottom skiff before dawn, former SEAL-turned-PI Craige Ingram spots grey-black smoke coiling above the treetops across the river in the direction of the Georgia bayous and Corpsewood Manor. Bayou or bogs, fire in the uncut cypress and pines bodes a sense that the river is no barrier to the fire that threatens his ancestral home, Moccasin Hollow. Neither are the bodies later found in the burned mansion of Corpsewood Manor. Craige wastes no time in helping his ex-SEAL buddy Lt. Graysen MacGerald who is now Head of Buckingham Homicide Investigations by unofficially investigating the bodies and an exquisite dragonfly brooch found in the mansion with a reputation for evil, hauntings, and mystery.

Blood of the dragonfly is book five of this series. It continues the series of crime-fighting and solving murders now in the backyard of to ex seals. If you are into mysteries and murder, this series is a good one for you.

Though I would suggest that you be wary that there are death scenes and some nasty words for some readers. This book is for adults, and I recommend maybe ages 16 to 17 years old and up. However, that is up to the parents and their choice to read this book or series. This series has different ratings for content for each book.

There seem to be quite a few twists and turns throughout the book. It all starts when Craige decides to help his buddy MacGerald get home from PDK airport. It seems to start up with a mysterious shadow that he thinks he spots. Someone somehow comes alive after being dead?

You will go for a ride and hit some bumps along the way. It starts heating up when Spinner decides to come for a visit at Moccasin Hollow. Will they find out who started the fire? Who is this mystery woman that shows up out of nowhere? Who messed with MacGerarald's investigation? Who wants them all dead? What does the dragonfly have to do with it at all?

Suppose you are into thrillers and suspense and mystery. This book and series is a good one to pick up and read. I have rated this book 4.5 stars (Moons). It seems to have puzzles and clues to have you guessing until the end. What did I know more about how Corpsewood Manor was the target or a little more detail about what was going on to set fire to Corpsewood?

Blood of the Dragonfly Brings Readers Detailed Settings and Well Developed Characters. While this book is part of a series--there is never a point where the author leaves readers feeling that something has been missed. He doesn't necessarily revisit and rehash previous adventures. Still, he gives readers enough detail that it becomes pretty easy to fall into the current novel's setting and plot--while becoming quite attached to his cast of characters. The initial storyline and character development may create a slow start to the book for some readers--but the author's writing style uses that groundwork well once his story picks up the pace. He begins weaving twists and turns into the mystery.

Expect to Enjoy the characters. As with the author's other books, he creates his story around some real-world grounded characters. Readers won't find perfect characters--but somewhat flawed ones with good intentions (or ones with real-world, less than stellar choices). I enjoy Ingram's character and his blend of "small town" guy with military/investigator characteristics. If you haven't read the other books of the series, you will become attached to Ingram quite quickly--if you have read more from the series, you will find that the author continues to keep his star true to character.

Expect a Suspenseful Journey for Readers. I enjoy MacKinney's mystery writing, and this novel is no exception. He creates just enough twists and turns to keep the mystery a mystery until later in the book--but doesn't throw in unnecessary or unrealistic twists that complicate or confuse readers. Once you settle into the story and the author's writing style--the mystery, the characters, and the detailed scenes combine for an exceptionally well-written novel that keeps readers engaged to the end.

Would I recommend Blood of the Dragonfly by Hawk MacKinney? MacKinney writes mystery novels that are packed with action and suspense and characters to love. I have enjoyed every book of the series and I would certainly recommend this book to murder mystery fans who enjoy realistic characters and being kept in suspense.

I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.

The combination of a private investigator with a police detective has appealed to me for a long time and I'm always happy to find a new duo. Craige Ingram and Lt. Graysen MacGerald aren't really new since this is the fifth series novel but they're new to me and, going into this story, I was even more pleased to see that these two men were former SEALs. There's something about SEALs that appeals to me, probably the thought that their extensive training and self discipline make them uniquely qualified for their chosen post-Navy careers (and I think the same can be said of their counterparts in other military branches like Rangers and Green Berets).

To my delight, Craige and Gray turned out to be just as compelling as I anticipated and it's clear that Mr. MacKinney knows how to craft and develop strong, intelligent characters who, whatever their advantages, are also very normal; they're people who certainly have more than a bit of baggage but have learned to cope and move on. I liked them a lot and wouldn't mind having them on my side. Craige is the actual star of the show but I hope the sense of equal status that I got from them in this book holds true in other volumes because they're so well-tuned and have such trust in each other.

They need those qualities as they work, in tandem and each in his own arena, to find the answers to a lot of questions in this case, a case that's full of twists and turns that kept me guessing almost to the very end. At first, the threads are seemingly unrelated but, before long, they're so interwoven only thoughtful instincts and intuitive detecting can bring it all together. To say I was well satisfied is putting it mildly and I'm looking forward to reading the four previous books.

Blood of The Dragonfly is the fifth installment from Hawk MacKinney’s Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series. I had the pleasure of reading the last book in the series, Dead Gold, and was excited to have a chance to read this one. Even though they are part of a series, I believe each book can be read as a stand alone. While I enjoyed book four, I think I enjoyed this one so much more! It is not a very long read, but it is full of what I like in a tale. First off, I know I should not judge a book but I was intrigued with this title and its cover. It had lot going on that held my attention throughout. There was unpredictable mystery and thrill riding suspense. I never knew what was going to happen next. I had to keep reading until I was completely done. It was so so good. I found it to be so much fun and entertaining to read.

Blood of The Dragonfly will be getting four and a half stars from me. I believe readers who enjoy reading quick mystery and suspense, will not want to miss out on this one. I would love to read more from the Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series in the future, as well as, catching up on the first three books that started it all off.

I received a paperback copy of Blood of The Dragonfly from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Blood of the Dragonfly by Hawk MacKinney centers around a fire that ended up taking out a bigger part of the Corpsewood Manor, along with bodies found in the burned mansion. Former Navy SEAL-turned-PI Craige Ingram along with his buddy, Head of Buckingham Homicide Investigation Lt. Graysen MacGerald is immediately on the case to find the reasoning behind the burned bodies, as well as who started the fire in the first place.

Craige Ingram is the person to follow as he starts the journey of solving the crime. A lot of things are happening in this story, many twists and turns that will keep you guessing. MacKinney does a really nice job choosing characters that develop well throughout the story. Lots of ups and downs and tension flowing around. Blood of the Dragonfly is a very well written book, the first book I have read by Hawk MacKinney, and I look forward to reading more. If suspense is what you enjoy, this would be a great choice for you.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Although not listed online anywhere, the cover of this book says it is Book 5 of “The Moccasin Hollow mystery series”. This is another story of Craige Ingram and his navy seal buddies. While they might seem like friends and “good old boys” they kick into profoundly serious sophisticated navy professionals when danger is involved. I love them all. They have their faults just like we “other humans”, but they are definitely the good guys. I also love all the up to date almost futuristic equipment mentioned in the story. I could picture Craige’s room full of computers, trackers, satellite pictures, etc. He even has his own plane and hangar outside of little ole Moccasin Hollow.
I’ve read one other Hawk McKinney book and really enjoyed it too. Sometimes both books seemed to move a little slow in the beginning. I think the reason for this is the author trying to paint the setting and the character for us. Most importantly, don’t let this stop your reading because the story, the suspense, and the action really make the book worthwhile.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Craige Ingram and his ex-SEAL friends are working on another murder case. This mystery occurs in Craige’s neck of the woods at Corpsewood Manor. Two bodies are found after the manor burns down. A dragonfly brooch is also found. Is it connected to the murders?

While they’re working on the case, a woman shows up who Craige and Spinner know all too well. They want to know why she is really here and if it has to do with the case.

There are so many questions! As usual, everything eventually fits into place so I had to keep reading to find out how.

Like the other books in The Moccasin Hollow Series, it took me a while to get into the book, I think partly because the author includes a lot of back story at the beginning so it does stand alone if you haven’t read the other books. It would be beneficial, though, to read Dead Gold before you read this one.

Once it got going, it was full of suspense, action, and twists. I also liked the ending. It’s definitely a book you’ll want to read if you like murder mysteries.

True friendships for better or worse are always ready to lean a hand

Mr. Hawk MacKinney blew my mind again with his new book BLOOD OF THE DRAGONFLY. It is mind-blowing, suspenseful, and funny too. Real friendships are always ready to lean a hand when one friend is in need. It does not matter if it is personal or not. These three seals' ability to solve the crime is beyond me. Their wittiness is so intense. These hometown heroes are not only respected but their powers are not to be taken for granted.

Some cops are amazing and some are all about money. That kind of deed is bad and they do not care if they murdered somebody as long as they have their money. Innocent people always pay the price.

This story is also about finding what matters to you and your heart. I admired the friendship between these three seals's the most. They are remarkable. This story is good and it is hard to put it down.

Visually In-Depth

The Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series Book Five follows our former Navy Seal, turned Private Investigator, Craig Ingram.

This mystery and suspense storyline follows Craig and his friend, who is also an ex-Navy Seal, Graysen MacGerald, head of the Buckingham Homicide Investigation Unit.

The investigation surrounds a local mysterious mansion, Corpsewood Manor, due to arson and dead charred bodies found within along with a unique dragonfly brooch.

This is a very well written book that truly draws you in with the author's visualization writing. Gives you a really in-depth feel to not only the plot and action, but the characters woven within. Plus, with a few twists and turns, you follow along with all the clues and puzzle it until the end.

I feel that one should read at least one of the other books in this series to really enjoy it. There are some things that must have happened in previous books that I would have liked to have read so I could have enjoyed this story more. This has a very good ending. I had some trouble in the beginning with the style of language but I got used to it. The characters are great. I received a copy of this book from ireadbooktours for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
