Lucy the Schnauzer lives with young Everett and his parents. Lucy teaches important life lessons to Everett. He shares those lessons with his cousin Eleanor. The lessons touch on helping others by being kind and asking others to join in play. Lucy teaches about staying healthy by eating well, exercising, brushing your teeth, playing outside, and getting a good night's sleep. She also explains the importance of working hard at school and taking care of yourself by asking for help or for attention when you need it.

Life Lessons from Lucy the Schnauzer by Colleen MacFarlane is (as Ms Macfarlane adeptly puts it) a story about what dogs teach their owners. This a great story that revolves around Everett and his cousin Eleanor (real life cousins as well as grandchildren to the author) and how Everett explains to his cousin how Lucy helps him to learn many life lessons. The artwork by Jasmine Smith is wonderfully cute and will hold the attention of any child. The colors are quite vibrant, although I felt it could have used more pastel coloring. The colors are consistent through out the story and does add to the overall appeal of the book. The story is well written and equally well paced. Simply convening some important ideas about confidences and making others feel good about themselves. The book also includes an afterward that tells the reader about Lucy and the authors Colleen and Bruce Macfarlane. After reading about Lucy the Schnauzer I realized that this is a story that children will want to read or have read to them over and over again. Hopefully later additions of this book would benefit from being printed on a board book. Making for a longer lasting quality book for kids to handle. Over all this is a fun read that can serve as a great guideline for kids with and without pets to learn to appreciate the thinks and people around them.
Thank you to Colleen Macfarlane for sending a copy to read and review. The review is my own opinion and not solicited in any way.
What a cute story. First-grader Everett joins his cousin Eleanor on the bus to school and starts telling her all the good things he's learned from observing his family's Schnauzer named Lucy. It's a cute way for kids to learn about sharing, being kind, eating well, sleeping, and other important lessons that might be hard to understand at a young age. I love how colorful the illustrations are, and I love the simple, to the point, lessons. Everything makes more sense with a dog in your life!
This little book is charming and insightful. The illustrations are bright and colorful and engaging. The fact that Everett has such an intuitive connection with his dog, Lucy, is not only magical but quite educational. Lucy provides comfort and reassurance to Everett and teaches him about kindness and wellness. Together, they inspire other children in the neighborhood.
Delightful romp with Everett, his dog Lucy and cousin Eleanor. The life lessons for young children in this book are universal, making it a fun read. Spectacularly illustrated with rich pictures. In paperback and e-book format selling on Amazon.
Nice illustrations and storylines for the entire family. This is an excellent book to read portions of at bedtime. That may stimulate good conversations related to situations children run into at home and school.
