Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Tells the tales of people who lived in Crickhowell in…. You guessed it….1881 and uses that device to show how people lived and themes in society at the time. What struck me most was how hard life was for so many. And it was not that long ago. Shows how institutions like the NHS and welfare state need to be protected. History is so important to remind us of that. I also liked how it was the tales of normal folks and not the local gentry that was the focus. Looking forward to the next one….. and doing the walk!

Very readable, so this was an excellent way to put a lot of research into an accessible and interesting read. Individual people and their lives were shown to us, along with the class structures of that time and this is how history is brought to life.
