Readers of the Secrets of The Tally Series are about to get a peek back in time, twenty years before the story of Allie and Archie begins, and told by the Escali Epic, Prince Avalask. Prepare for a few characters you know, like Savaul, Gataan, and Maverick - and a few you’ve only been able to hear about.
Knowing how the story ends won’t make it any less exciting.
Prince Avalask is a prequel to the Secrets of the Tally Series by Halie Fewkes. There are multiple warnings online and in the beginning of the book to not read this prequel until you have read book 4 in the series, at least! Though the information is well laid out in this prequel, it is definitely better to have read the series first, as intended, to completely understand the world and people in this book. At the time I am writing this review, book 5 of Secrets of the Tally has not been released yet, so I read this prequel right after reading book 4, To Wear the Cloak, eagerly wanting to continue being immersed in the awesome series story and find out more!
I loved this prequel! It is not written in a direct point of view from any character (like in the series where a couple characters in their chapters think and provide us the story in the text as “I.”) The main focus is on Prince Avalask, but as everything and every character is so well connected in this series, this also gives us a lot of the backstory of many characters that I was excited to read!
I found it intriguing to observe where book 4 ends, then going right into reading the prequel next and seeing which character chapter the prequel begins with! As Halie Fewkes’ quote on the inside of the hardcopy version’s front cover that I read from suggests, “Knowing how the story ends won’t make it any less exciting.” That is so true! I knew a certain ending was inevitable, but I still had to choke back tears (a couple times) on the way to it happening! Such great writing and I love getting to find out the details of a backstory in this way, after reading so much of the forward action of a series with the desire to know all about what the time before the beginning of book 1 looked like! Honestly, I would even love to read more prequels if she ever chooses to make them in a continuation of this series! I would be interested in reading about past generations of Epics, about the Everarc Crystal discoveries, and even about how things were before the discovery of the Everarc Crystals!
I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I will just end my review here saying, if you are interested in reading Prince Avalask, make sure you have read the Secrets of the Tally series through book 4, and then pick this up! I highly recommend it!
Loved this other side! The story from another view! The prequel of the pieces hinted at through the series! This was a wonderful look that just made me really fall for other characters and get behind them! Broke my heart at parts, but in a sweet and caring way that added to the overall story!
