BIG OR SMALL? is a fun little board book of opposites, featuring cut-outs and peek-throughs. Each page contains a set of opposite words, such as old and new or outside and inside along with an illustration of each term. Illustrations are colorful and the textures throughout add some extra fun to the read for little fingers.

What I loved: The clever and colorful illustrations give young children lots to look at as they explore the book. The simple opposite words are a great introduction to this concept. The cut-outs and peek-throughs add some visual and tactile interest across the book. In terms of the book itself, the words are large, clear, and easy to read. The size of the book is great for little hands, the thick board book pages are nice and sturdy.

What left me wanting more: The cut-outs are exactly the size of the next page, so they get stuck across pages and are tough to pull apart, even for bigger/older hands. This makes it tough for little ones to fully explore the book on their own. Luckily, not every page is impacted, so there are a few they can explore on their own. It would have been helpful to have the cut-outs a little smaller than the opening, so they could turn much easier.

Final verdict: A brightly colored collection of opposites, BIG OR SMALL? is a fun board book that combines cut-outs and peek-throughs with simple illustrations and terms to help teach the concept to young readers.

In this board book, the fourth in a series of First Words, readers learn about opposites. In each page, there are opposites such as a big building and a small one, a hot air balloon high in the sky going up, and a house that is left behind or down. Several of the pages feature cutouts that allow readers to catch a glimpse of the next page or the previous one. Of course, some of these concepts depend on perspective since a house that seems large to one person might not seem so big to another person or when compared to another house. Nevertheless, the simple but important words and the colorful illustrations combine to assist youngsters in becoming familiar with these terms and discussing the words and the images with older members of the family. The book provides a fresh approach to increasing vocabulary and knowledge. I look forward to more like this one.

Part of a series (First Words), this book is nicely sized for little hands and printed on sturdy board pages. The opposites are well presented - The pictures clearly illustrate the concepts and readers will be able to catch on to the meaning of “opposites.’

This is a simple book, with just the two words on each page (old/new, many/few) but there are just enough extra details that there will be plenty to talk about between adult and child as they look at the book together.

Especially fun are the pages that have windows cut through to show part of the next or previous illustration.

Recommended to families with babies and toddlers learning to hold books and turn pages, people learning the concept of opposites, beginning English language learners.
