Jay Y. Kim serves as lead pastor at WestGate, a multicongregational church in Silicon Valley. He is the host of IVP's Digital Examen podcast and the author of several books, including Analog Christian, Analog Church, and Listen Listen Speak. Jay serves on the board of Practicing the Way and has spent two decades in local church ministry, all in the San Francisco Bay Area, serving as a teaching pastor and church planter over the years. Jay lives in Silicon Valley with his wife Jenny and their two children.

This devotional on the book of Colossians is a straightforward study that gives you a selection of text to read and some questions to cover. The readings and questions are set out for everyday, however, the study is mostly to be conducted for the purposes of a group study. This won't really be an asset for a family study depending on the ages in the family and might be a struggle for those on age or even spiritual age. The study is one that wants to focus on looking at other people like those in the church, the Church, and others in the world. Unless your brand new to Bible study or want something very light for a group study, I didn't get much from this study other than the reading from Colossians.

Let me be clear and say that there's nothing heretical or outright wrong in the book. Kim's videos are well-produced but that portion could have easily been added to the text of the book. This seems to be the trend for many lay people-led studies. The questions tend to be pretty superficial such "what impacted you from the teaching" or "tell about a time when Jesus was at the center of your journey" or "what's your attitude towards your work". A Bible study shouldn't divorce feelings from knowledge or in the sanctification process, but this study is heavy on that type of application. The study gets a person into the Word which is what's needed and positive, but as a daily study the breakdowns are really short if you meet with the group every week. If you've never done a Bible study before or a brand new Christian this might be a good introduction to Colossians - just know that you can go deeper and there's more to focus on than feelings-based application. Final Grade - D.

4.5 Stars. First let me thank Harper Collins for the advance copy. This study guide goes along with a video streaming series that is available through StudyGateway.com. I did not purchase a membership to use the code and just read the study guide. The lack of ability to use the videos is why I knocked it down a half star.
Just reading the study guide is useful for personal Bible study if you have never done a book study of Colossians. The basic study is very clear and doesn't go off on wild theories. He sticks to solid, practical, applicable use of the Scripture while also giving the background for the book.

It was written to be used primarily as a group study material and personally I think that would be the best use of this book. If you have a small group that is looking to do a Bible study together but also looking to grow closer together as Christian brothers and sisters then this book will certainly help meet those stated goals.

It took me way too long to get through this because.. life.. but I really enjoyed this. I didn't use it as a small group study just a personal one, but I think utilizing the free access to the online content for a group would be an excellent way to study through this.

Each chapter and daily section was easy to read, understand, and work through. I now have many more notes in my Bible thanks to this study. I'll be revisiting it in the future.

This book is a well-written, in-depth study of the Book of Colossians. The author provides a video supplement and thought-provoking questions designed to guide group discussion and lead to one's introspection. It has been laid out in a way that brings clarity and simplicity to each session and can be used either for individual study, or for your Bible study group. Excellent book!

a very practical study guide through the book of Colossians. also, the author put very good practical insights on some verses. I highly recommend picking this book if you plan a deep dive into The book of Colossians.
