On a hostile, disaster-ridden planet ravaged by a virus, humans and vampires fight for survival. But staying alive might be easier said than done in a world where the dead don’t stay dead.
Living among the devastation is Abby Rose, a member of the Vanguard, doing her best to protect herself and those around her between waiting tables at a local motel bar and grill.
I'm the liar now. We went through so much together, both of us barely surviving. But we did and we fell in love. He means everything to me and he has no idea who I am. Worse, when he lost his memory he lost the part of him that I fell in love with. Now he's just an asshole and I will do whatever it takes to hide my past—our past, from this new version of him. I'm not fine. Not anymore. But he'll never know. And I'll do anything to keep it that way.
Evanescent is book three in the series The War of Blood and Roses by author R. Valentine. Absolutely brilliant it’s filled with wall the wonders of the previous books yet this one will tear your heart asunder. I believe my heart actually broke reading this book- it was like riding a roller coaster that has no ending in sight. And then it just ended - done. I’m at a loss- I want more, no I need more. Their story can not just end this way it’s utterly devastating. Yet it will keep you wanting- needing more. Enjoy!!

He doesn’t remember me. He doesn’t remember what happened these last few months, the last few days. I am a stranger to him, my beloved Ethan, and he hates me. He is different. He is so angry and argumentative. He is an ass who treats me like I am scum. He told me to leave him alone so that’s what I do. We all agreed not to tell him about what we were to each other. He is to remain in the dark because this version of him would use the information as a weapon against me. He would use it just to tear me down.
I’m trying to leave him alone but he’s always there. He’s always watching me with a glare on his face. He doesn’t understand why I hang around with his crew. He doesn’t understand why they are choosing me over him. He hates me for it. He shames me. He calls me names and treats me like a whore. He accused me of sleeping around with his friends. I just take it, because I remember what he was like. I remember my Ethan.
Despite doing what he asked, he keeps coming up to me. Asking me questions I can’t answer. He wants the memories that are inside my head but I won’t give them to him. Not this man standing in front of me. They are my memories, to exist only between me and the love that I lost. Why won’t we just leave me alone?
Review:
This book is so different from the first two. The first two books were focused on the plot of the world, the war with the zombies and Spyders, whereas this one is focused on the relationship (or lack there of) between Ethan and Abby. I really enjoyed getting to read about the struggles Abby faced as she dealt with a version of Ethan she had never known. Watching her navigate this harsher, angrier Ethan and constantly compare him to the one she loved was heartbreaking. There were many moments I found myself spewing vitriol at him as well as some that made me ache in sadness. The author does such a great job at keeping you on the fence the entire time, until she shoves you head first off one side later in the book.
We got to explore more of Abby’s relationships with the side characters in this book. Most of them were acting as buffers to keep her from being around or alone with Ethan. It was nice to seem them rally for her and to watch his frustration at not understanding why, and being put second to a human. To say that plenty of groveling and putting him in his place occurred is an understatement. I stand by the fact that Sylis is the best side character and I refuse to release my claim on him. We are introduced later on to a new characters, Kean, who brings about a love triangle for the book. Some might say it’s a contrived relationship just added for plot and, yea maybe. But the development for Abby and Kean was there. They started out friends as they had something unique in common and it slowly develops into more. It may have been a kick in the butt for a certain character, but it was nice to get to see Abby be treated the way Ethan used to.
This is the longest book of the series but despite that, there isn’t too much I felt was unnecessary. This book does author Dual POV and we get to see that Ethan isn’t this hard shell he portrays in front of Abby. It’s nice to get his perspective of th events but this does bring about one issue I had with the book. Ethan’s POVs are usually a backtrack of story we already got from Abby’s perspective. It leaves the book feeling a bit repetitive and a bit unnecessary. A simple change of letting the POV switches be from that moment on instead of backtracking and making them more detailed would solve this, and cut down on some of the pages. The plus side though, NO INFO DUMPING in this book. Snaps and claps!
My other other issue with this book, and maybe the biggest, is it’s disconnect from the world the author has built. It really feels in some ways, like it doesn’t belong with the rest of the story that’s been told so far. The threat of the Spyders and the Revenants basically go away, despite that we are told constantly there is still and issue. We only see them three times in the entire book and usually it only lasted a couple of pages. I understand that the author is trying to tell Ethan and Abby’s love story within this deadly world, but the previous books to this one just don’t line up too well. I just wish we had them pose a bit more of a threat to the town with some action scenes.
Also, this book was just a bit too spicy for me. I did find myself skimming those scenes when they came up. No hate to anyone who likes it or the author for writing it, but I just couldn’t read them. It got a bit intense in some scenes and there were a lot of them scattered throughout.
I don’t consider this to be my favorite out of the series and I do hate the fact that it’s getting a slightly lower rating. The pacing and plot deviation is unfortunately the biggest reason why. It’s still a good book but it’s just not as good as the two that came before it. Despite this, I still consider the series so far to be a 4star read and I’m eager to catch up with book four!
First book captured me from page one ! I love the storyline and the characters, the relationships as they progress !! This series is a perfect crazy mixture if you like The Vampire Diaries & The Walking Dead with wayyy more spice , seduction , & adventure!! The first book was a bit of world building but also a spicy af romance growing & it ripped my heart out there at the end but felt so good lol (if you know , you know) .. Now the second book .. OMG .. I thought the first book pulled me in?? Nope. The second book even better !! WOW .. I have no words .. but I will say it ended with a twist & a cliffhanger & just as my heart was finding its way back into my chest it was wrenched out AGAIN !! But it’s so so good !! Now book 3 ?? Damn it’s an addiction at this point.. & wow book three has been the best yet .. with more emotions that I could handle I was crying right along with the FMC feeling everything .. just wow .. my heart is taking a beating at this point !! With added characters & more adventures I’m loving it .. & as my heart starts to swell from the happiness & the coming together of certain things it is QUICKLY jolted from my chest again & I was audibly screaming “wtf” , “is this a dream” , “is this really happening” , “what is going on” , “what the f NO!” … so many things fell out of my mouth at the end of book 3 .. WOWWWWWW my effing heart hurts so damn good !! I’m off to start book 4 … I’m so nervous, anxious , excited & READY!! I will definitely update the next review ! BUT READ THIS BOOK/SERIES !!
This is book 3 in the series and I feel it just keeps getting better and better and better. I am glued to the series and I never want it to stop. Again love this world building and love all the characters even when they are the biggeet ass ever🖤
So this book has a lot less action out in the morgue and is more drama based written. My poor heart was torn to shreds in this book. This book is also alot more spicy than the rest.🥵
How I know I am reading a good book is by how I feel and react to things happening. After reading book 1 and 2 I am so emotionally invested in Ethan and Abby that reading this one broke me a little. I wish I had a friend as fantastic as Sylis. Close to the end of the story I immediately shouted yes...finally...gone be the evil...just to hold my breath to see what is going to happen again. Definitely an emotional roller-coaster read. But absolutely and completely worth everything. Absolutely amazing story.
Please note that this is not a stand alone read. You need to read the first and second books before starting this.
I don’t think I have ever been on a crazier rollercoaster in a book than this one. I’m literally fuming about the plot twist that happens at the end but I still give it a solid 5 stars! I feel like I’ve been slapped in the face and I’m watching a soap opera from the 90s I’m so upset and shocked lol. I’m not good at writing reviews but I had to let everyone know my emotional turmoil regarding this book right now. Thank you. (5 stars even with the therapy I’ll probably need after this series)
Honestly most series lose me by this point, but not this one! If you love the steamy scenes, they were there (it was so many I was flipping past them). It was the storyline for me! The inner monologue was a little drawn out at times, but not enough to give up on the book or series (again just skimmed through if need be) I’m not a five star review type girl but I give credit where credit is due…Let’s go!!! (Next book please)
Will they find their way back again? Abby knows that she can't continue on this path with Ethan. He will destroy her if she isn't careful. He isn't the same Ethan that she loved that she would die for. Ethan knows now what she meant to him but how can he win her back? Is there any hope for them? A devastating chapter in their story
Good...lord...ok if you loved books 1 & 2 and this book starts to break your heart (and trust me, it will continuously and often)...just see it through. I won't say it gets easier, but it's worth it. And hopefully by the end of the series, it will have been REALLY AND ACTUALLY worth it.
I read and reread. My breath comes on shallow bursts at the intense drama . I keep coming back to this series and I can’t put it down. When I do, my thoughts and my reality are intertwined.
I've been trying so hard to get through this book 😒. But, I'm getting tired of the storyline, the non-stop back and forth, will this happen or will it finally make sense 🤔. Thanks R., but I think I've reached the end of my tether 🤓.
WTF. That was such a ride. It was definitely a different vibe from the first two books but I was immediately sucked in and DEVOURED it! And the revelations at the end! Bruh! I am floored! This series has me by the cojones. Love it!
I have to say this book of the series is a favorite! the Supernatural reference was perfect and made me so happy. The writing is great and emotions that it brings...oy good book.
This was my Fav book of series - readers whiplash it gave me, yes. this was great - I luv that this Author is a risk taker and explores other ways to tell the story.
buckle up readers, this read is nothing like books 1&2.
I had to give the Author 5 stars as this book explored his point of view in even extra detailed taking much deeper inky steps, which was wonderfully intimate considering the journey and wringer we went through wtfing with Ethan's alphahole amnesia. I really enjoyed the diary reflection and sleuthing scenes as Ethan is confronted by the truths written at his own hands - he cant ignore.so good.
Vampires great spice Paranormal Romance Zombie Apocalypse Dystopia Setting Secret Identity Amnesia Enemies to Lovers Bully Romance Fated Mates Dual POV Who did this you Sacrifice for love Love Triangle Found Family Grovelling
how hot are these book covers. Id loved to see some character art for all the players in the series.
Chk out the authors TT page- her edits are fantastic.
3.5 Stars I read the first three back to back because I loved the characters and the plot. This book I enjoyed but I just wanted over. The back in forth between the main character and love interest was starting to get old. I hope the next book clears everything back up again.
