An exceptional book about a mother who ends up eating her son. Not exactly an easily digestible story. The illustrations are as vivid as haunting. It is all quite surreal. I have this fascination for books that are stirring. That provoke one to think beyond the words; that make you look for that deeper meaning. A lot of things in life are not straight-forward. Our demons, our feelings, our thoughts, and our actions. Even though the mother desires to eat a child for a fair amount of time, she ends up eating her own son in an impulse. Blind from hunger, no longer aware of her surroundings. What follows is great grief, great tearless grief. The moon accompanies her throughout the story. Mostly closed eyed. Till in the end, the moon is everywhere, and the mother is gone. Only her voice can still be heard; she is still haunting. Haunting for a child; one to love, not to eat.
