Seven young people Bernie, Grainne, Sinead, Amanda, Willie, Larry and Michael set out for a ballet school on the edge of Siberia. Away from home for the first time, they have to deal with a foreign language, strange food, icy streets, different customs and the difficulties of life for everyone in present-day Russia, on top of the exhausting daily routine of ballet class with its triumphs and disappointments. Despite jealousies, illness, postal delays and problems phoning home, they are kept going by their determination to become good dancers.
