— fun, plottwisty, gripping but slightly disappointing — [major spoilers]
The book picks up exactly where the first one left off. Meaning we follow Sandra into her confused feelings concerning her duties as a Seiki and her ambivalences about her feelings towards Knox while also dealing with the ambush of the palace she survived from.
This was honestly my most anticipated book release and it did not disappoint—until it did. I loved the three intertwined plottwists very much but also didn’t, which is more of a personal thing. The grand reveal of the boys’s swap kind of ruined it for me but I also quite enjoyed it I was totally caught off guard by Dakotas betrayal and loved that plot line greatly. Considering the fast and rushed cutely written ending of this final book in the duology it should’ve been lengthier.
Ever since Hagen came into view in the first instalment, I was sure that Hagen would end up with Sandra. Unfortunately my ship didn’t sail, but nevertheless the ending as well as the Epilogue were beautiful and cute. (Also Sandra was a bit annoying in this book if I’m being honest.)
Even though the story expanded and improved greatly plot wise, the writing "flaw" could still be found in this one: the shallowness and too vague writing. If it weren’t for the shallowness, the writing concerning interaction scenes and battle scenes was superb. Another thing that I noticed is that the climaxes and battles passed as quickly as they began. Dakota’s last battle, for instance, could have been longer, meaning that she switched sides too easily and fast for me. An advice I’d give to the writer would be to extend and enrich the world building and also in depth character writing when it comes to getting a character on one’s side, meaning emotions, denial etc… I think the book would’ve been greater if it went in depth a bit more character wise and all.
IN CONCLUSION I’d say that I enjoyed this book and the world, the plottwist and plot lines had me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the characters in general and getting to see more of Hagen. I personally just dislike love triangles, which ruined the book for me and lead to the rating, as well as the rushed ending. I’d nevertheless RECOMMEND this duology.
