RIPPED ROAD: Book 1: AN INFECTED ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE series

Rate this book
Sgt Chris WARD leads the Special Forward Intelligence Unit. The infected are coming north this year as the spring weather warms. The government has an idea how to stop them, Chris's mind may be slipping. The line between right and wrong is blurring. But these are dark days. Where survival is superseding orders. Things are about to get messy.

Prologue
There will be no happy ending here, Chris thought. He stood in front of the mirror in the grey stone bathroom. He stared at himself without really seeing. Standing naked, still wet from the tub. He had lost weight. Still muscular, but more lean now. Short cropped black hair, and full of the tattoos of his youth. Thirty-six going on eighty-five he thought. He had done more damage to his body than most men in five lifetimes. The women screaming outside would not stop. He had been hearing the succession of claymores exploding outside for the last hour. An old familiar sound, like an old friend still talking to him. Chris looked at the tub still half-full with hazy eyes. Half drunk, half high he lit another cigarette. The tub was dirty with a mix of mud and blood. He had prepared for this day for a year. There was no need to panic, everything was in place. Everything was taken care of. The women screaming outside was starting to give him a headache though. KERR would have to replace the claymores tomorrow. Then he remembered KERR was dead. How could he fucking forget? Chris threw his cigarette into the toilet and pulled up his jeans, not bothering with underwear. He slid his glock into the back of his pants and grabbed his M4. As he walked the pistol felt cold, it was hot tonight and the city was on fire. Dark had rolled in a long time ago, and there was no wind, just the screams of the city. Chris walked outside the compound and slowly climbed the watchtower with the M4 on his bare back. As he climbed he wondered if he was going to kill the women to put her out of her misery or to stop his headache. Today it did not really matter. He didn’t care.

An action-packed zombie apocalypse novel with a badass protagonist. The story definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat, although the prose needs a better edit. However, it doesn’t deter from the heart-stopping plot line.

Who doesn't love zombies!

A fast paced action packed apocalypse story. Easy reading, very descriptive, there are a few editing issues but overall a good read. Look forward to the next installment.

I'm undecided on this book. There are certain parts I really, really liked that would be 5 stars and then there are parts that I hated that took away from my overall enjoyment of the story. I listened to the story 3 different times and in the end my initial thoughts on the story stayed the same.

All in all an it's a good start to a potentially really great series and an entertaing listen with plenty of action, interesting characters and unexpected twists. The story pulled me in immediately but as the story went on it lost me , pulled me back in, lost me again and then pulled me back in. The story would pull me in then there would be something that happened and my reaction was .. WTH ..why? Example - The repeated sexual dreams turning into nightmares, the attempted sexual assault by an infected. The numerous descriptive sex fantasies/nightmares were unnecessary and all it did for me was make the MC seem creepy/sleezy and unhinged at times. Karle's thoughts about how her body looks in a descriptive sexual way also took away from the likability of the characters. If your in the middle of a Zombie apocalypse are you really going to be thinking about sex that much.

I did like the fact that Chris and Karle both for the most part seem to be smart and ruthless (especially Chris) enough to do what needs to be done to survive. If your in a SHTF situation Chris is the kind of guy you would want by your side. In a lot of stories the MC's are too stupid to live, that’s not the case here which is a huge bonus. Both Chris and Karle were great characters aside from the above mentioned issue.

Terrible way to end the book. The very last line wasn't needed at all.

Even though there were things I didn't like about the story I will most definitley listen to the next book in the series. I'm interested to see where the author takes the story and the characters. It has the potential to turn into a fantastic series.

My first reaction was hmm…odd choice to have a female narrator when most of the story is from a male point of view. This is the first time I have listened to a book narrated by Amanda Vargas and her narration was good. Pleasant voice, smooth flow and easy to listen to. She could use a little bit more distinction between the characters voices. I would definitley listen to other books narrated by her.

I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request from the author and have voluntarily left this review.

A fast-moving apocalypse novel where flesh-eating zombies roam in packs and government soldiers are deployed to find and destroy them. The book takes us right into the heart of the action from page one, and as such, it seems as if we have come halfway into the story without knowing fully why things are as they are. We are left to figure out some of the missing parts, but are not given enough information. However, it is a tight story as it is written about events that are unfolding, and there is a sense that the author knows what he is writing about when describing the various combat situations, weapons, etc, that are described. Yes, there are some spelling and grammar errors, but it doesn’t really detract from the story, they are just inconveniences. It is an easy to read book.

Creepy action packed horror

The world had already gone wrong years ago with the zombie apocalypse and now there was only a few cities surviving. When Chris and Kerr are sent to investigate a hoard of zombies it all goes wrong, Kerr is killed and Chris has to fight for his survival to get back home. But now his home is under attack from a fresh hoard of zombies. This is fast paced and genuinely scary. The gore is well described and requires someone with a strong stomach to read. For example the mum and baby scene on the road was pretty horrific. If like all that though then it will love this. The way it ends is a bit strange though but I genuinely hope there is a sequel.

Inventive story!

Chris worked with Kerr in the special forward Intel unit who were tasked to observe the hoardes of infected, flesh eating zombies and advise direction of travel. The stench of roting flesh accompanied these manic creatures and whilst on full alert, the mission was more difficult than Chris first thought.
A colourful and graphic picture is painted by the author of a fast moving, creative and detailed storyline, where your imagination is easily captured. There are some editing issues which, once corrected will bring this book up to the level it deserves but the story overall is enjoyable. Good job!

Zombies on the move

In a post-apocalyptic zombie-filled world, Chris is the former MMA soldier you hope is by your side. He is not afraid to do the tough stuff but cares about his team and, more importantly, a four-legged furry friend named Sampson. There is plenty of high-tension action and just a sprinkling of sexual tension. Karle makes an excellent addition to the storyline. I was not expecting it to end the way it did, but it gives the author the ability to continue growing his world. A little editing would easily have made this a five-star book for me. I do recommend adding Ripped Road: Book 1 if you enjoy post-apocalyptic stories to your to-be-read list.

Action Packed!!!

The author painted a vivid picture of this action packed zombie tale through his writing. Chris of the SFIU unit was on a mission to destroy zombie hoards along with his unit member KERR. However, the mission goes awry. The cliffhanger leaves you anticipating what's to be expected in the next installment of the series. Outside of a few typos, this was a great book.

Chris is such an interesting character, and it kept me into the story all the way through. It was a story that kept ongoing. Never was boring. Always had something that was happening. This author knew how to entertain readers about a zombie apocalypse story! I loved reading this more than watching the walking dead! It was so descriptive, and I loved it! Dammit on the cliffhanger! I want to know what is going to happen next. I am excited about the next story!

Zombie Apocalypse

If I ever have to endure a Zombie Apocalypse, I want Chris on my side. The military vet has some great experience and knows exactly what to do. He works for a government agency trying to combat the issue and ends up in some really tough situations. He meets Karle and even though he shoots her and they don’t really trust each other at first, they become somewhat “friends”. Overall, the characters were enjoyable. I don’t want to give too much away so I won’t say anymore. But if you enjoy a Zombie book, this is a good choice.

Zombies done different

A post apocalyptic zombie romp with a little romance tossed in the mix. Chris, the hero/anti-hero is a no nonsense former MMA fighter and general bad ass. His only emotional connection is to his team and a dog. This is definitely my first zombie book that has a dog’s POV written into it. The story is well crafted and I would have easily given it five stars if not for the editing and typos. I look forward to reading more of the story.

This is a gritty hard nosed zombie apocalypse book. The author didn’t hold back on the thoughts of Chirs the special forces operator. I was a little iffy at the beginning of the book, but was quickly hooked as the characters were layered out in the story. This story takes place immediately after the break out. My only negative is that the book ends on a cliffhanger. I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book. Good stuff.

Best book I’ve read for ages...... ..and I’ve read some excellent books this past year. This was brilliant. An outstanding first chapter that went at me from the start and I was gripped. But like a rollercoaster, it occasionally lowered the pace before hitting me hard again! I absolutely loved it. So so so much better than watching 28 days and 28 weeks later and I love movies but this book really did surprise and impress me. I have it on ku and I don’t really want to give it back

Epic Zombie thriller

I quite enjoyed this Zombie Apocalypse story, I was a bit confused at first as you start in the middle of the story but I quickly got to grips with it. Chris is such a ferocious character, who you would want on your side he takes no prisoners. It is a very graphic story that you might need a sick bucket for with blood and guts everywhere. I don't know if this is anything new but still enjoyable. Would recommend to anyone who loved this genre.

Eerie and disturbing horror 😍🤩🤩

I finished this book in one sitting. I bit my nails while reading it so imagine the state of them now.
Sgt Chris Ward was brave and a lateral thinker. This story was uplifted with his hero qualities, so I kept on reading...trusting in his abilities. Even though this is a fiction horror, I always look for heroes and the author gave me that soothing comfort for me to keep on reading it.

An interesting read!

I was a little confused when I began reading this book as it felt like I was jumping in in the middle of the story and I had missed something. It took a little time for me to figure out where this book was going and it also seemed to end just as abruptly. The book could do with editing as it stopped me at times a nd had to re-read parts but all in all, this is a good book with characters and a storyline that has been well thought out. Well done.

Surprisingly Different

This is a great start to a series of zombie books. This is a different type of story about zombies and Chris is an extremely interesting character trying to make it through an apocalypse. I really enjoyed reading his story and I loved Karle. There were lots of twists and surprises. I am not normally one to read zombie books but I am glad I gave this one a try. It was a great read.

Congratulations on your first work!

We have a story set an indefinite amount of time after a zombie outbreak. We start off with 2 main characters plus their old dog, Sampson. Things don’t go as planned during an ambush on a horde headed to their city. This is definitely a beginning to a series that I would like to follow.
Good luck with your next book.

Rogue soldier, beautiful woman, remote farmhouse, what could go wrong? It's a zombie apocalypse, so he shoots her before he meets her, and that's just a start. There are definitely grammar/spelling/punctuation/format issues, but they didn't bother me so much, because it was the apocalypse, and I wanted to keep reading. You will too.

Full of Action

This was an action-packed story, which is not for the faint of heart or for someone who is offended by profanity. The author indicated that the book had been recently re-edited, although there were still typos and scenes with head hopping.
The author did a good job intricately describing action scenes. If you're not a squeamish reader, this book may be for you.

Gritty, edgy, and pretty good

This story has everything you would expect from a post-apocalyptic zombie book. What was different were the vestiges of infrastructure
I always like a guy meets girl with a dog in the mix. With some editing and fleshing out this book will pop. Good job.

a well thought out story

When I started reading Ripped Road, I expected a typical Walking Dead saga of zombie chasing. Instead I found well written characters in a well thought out story. That said, if you like action packed zombie adventures you will not be disappointed. I have no problem giving it five stars.

Action-packed and tense!

This book is action packed from the start. The story flows well and certainly has enough action to keep you turning the pages. The story is colourful, creative and original. Overall a good read - I will be looking out for more titles from this author.

A great addition to the genre.

Zompoc is my absolute fave and always great to find a new author. Interesting storyline with a great anti-hero in Chris. Looking forward to the next one.

Good book, bad writing

The story was good but difficult to read with all the spelling and grammar issues. Hopefully the next book is edited or at least read before publishing.

I love zombie and apocalypse everything! This book didn’t disappoint! Chris is pretty awesome and I felt like I was watching an action movie watching the situations he went through. If you like this sort of thing this book is for you. Will follow the series
