Valuable addition to the literature on Japan of that time.
Caron knew his stuff, having lived there for a long time - his name is well-known, in fact.
Of course not much is entirely new if you've already read books on that period, even if he brings some unique insights thanks to his position, knowledge of the people, language and texts.
