December 15, 2008This is quite an unusual book.
A short novel which centers around an Yankee war profiteer during the American involvement in Vietnam, NIGHT OF THE DRAGON breezes right along, with plenty of fascinating diversions along the way.
The "love interest" between these pages concerns that very same American war profiteer, Jason Glenn Dawson, and his paramour Kim Anh Thi - a Vietnamese transsexual (non-operative) who was educated in Ivy League schools, Stateside, and hooked up with the CIA upon graduation.
Again, an UNUSUAL book.
Lots of twists, turns, violence, graphic sex scenes.
Angelo Victor Mercure has lots of insights regarding the dark underbelly of the Southeast Asian underworld.
All in all, a very interesting read.

Jason Glenn Dawson and Kim Anh Thi are quite the lovely couple.
Dawson is an American war profiteer and Kim an undercover CIA spy whose job is to "eliminate" him.
A rather bold, different book in that Dawson is a good-looking, ex-GI who wines and dines Ms. Thi, fully aware that this lovely lass is a pre-operative Vietnamese-American transsexual!
No matter: she will facilitate his ultimate undoing......
Quite a rollercoaster of a book: lots of wild sex and insane violence.
What saves this Night of the Dragon from being a total potboiler are the intricate plots, rather gratuitous counterplots, and excellent, wise-cracking dialogue.
Angelo Victor Mercure can really write!

Angelo Victor Mercure's first book.
Some call it his best.
I don't know if I would agree, since he's written other great stuff during subsequent years (Thousand Yard Stare; Blue Tiger/Yellow Fang; Temptation Eyes).
However, I like NIGHT OF THE DRAGON enormously.
Why?
Well, it has everything: intrigue, violence, sex, exotic locations.....what more can I ask?

I read this filth because it was burning a hole in my loins. But alas, I could not resist it. The draw was too intense. Must… push… down… feelings… kapowpowpow! Explosive finish.
I owe the Marriott hotel some new curtains.
