Cans for Change

Daniel Jeffries knows cars.
More importantly he knows his dad’s car,
a 1970 Ford XW Falcon GT.
His dad’s pride and joy. Or it was until…
…his dad became obsessed with recycling.
To have a dump for a backseat is the worst.
Especially when the school bully discovers Daniel.
The flies. The filth. The funk.
Will Daniel’s reputation be rusted or restored?

‘Cans for Change’ is a hilarious father-and-son adventure about cars, police, recycling, bin diving and zombies!!! Illustrated throughout with outrageous antics suited for middle-grade fiction readers. I want to buy this book for my younger cousin and for my older cousin's kids (I have many cousins). It's not quite my style of book, but even when I was reading it I could absolutely see the appeal. This book doesn't stop, it is just go go GO right from the start, and I promise that not you nor your kids will be able to see where it ends.

But anyway, this book is hilarious, the drawings scattered on almost every page made me grin because they're so gosh darned charming (and funny), and the way the story emphasises the words makes it super easy to read. A good book for that child who either doesn't want to read or has difficulty with books, perhaps? Also, if your kid loves cars, this book is a must have, there are so many car references that are flawless.

Anyway, the book is all about Daniel Jeffries, a young lad who must deal with the trouble of being a regular kid. And also his recycling addict dad who puts those people at bottle exchanges to absolute shame (love what they do, btw, recycling ftw). It's environmentally conscientious, is what it is.

So, yeah. If you have a kid, are a kid, or know a friend or family's kid to the point that you are on 'give a gift' duty, this book is perfect!

My 8 year old son loves this book. The pictures are funny, and the writing is quite original. We love all the car-related similes, and my son loves that a police officer follows his car with a megaphone. Oh, and the bumcrack in the mirror illustration. My son giggled and giggled. I'm loathe to even mention that picture because this book is so much more than cheap laughs. I'm really impressed with the writing in this one.

You know how good a book is when you watch your kids consume it all in one sitting. That's the true measure!!! This book is amazing with so many greater themes for the young impressionable mind. Being embarrassed by your parents, navigating your own anxiety, interactions with bullies and of course recycling. Highly recommend this book for teachers to use in class for book reviews and especially for those reluctant readers.
