Mother's Day

Rate this book
The second book in The Rye Rooftop Club series is the hilarious, heart-warming Mother’s Day - a story of friends, relationships, gnomes, skinny dipping, breaking into other people’s houses, sausage rolls, forward rolls, nice shoes, motherhood and untold secrets.

Among the ancient cobbled streets of Rye, Anna receives a mysterious offer at a funeral that will lead to burglary and new horizons. Ralph is settling into life in The Bookery when two different mothers threaten to sweep away everything he has worked for, including the love he was just learning to enjoy. Handsome Joe has begun to lose some of his confidence, but then a surprising woman makes him rethink his future in Rye. As usual, they are supported by an unforgettable cast of characters, including Irene, the cantankerous waitress with erratic kidneys, Martin, the homeless art teacher with a hidden past and Stanley, the beagle with his own book club.

Each night these friends form The Rye Rooftop Club on a hidden terrace high above the town and share the ups and downs, tears and laughter, that make them a true family of friends.

The first book in the series, The Rye Rooftop Club, is also available on Amazon. It is recommended that the books are read in order.

About the author

Mark Feakins

Mark was born in Sussex on the south coast of England in the same year as Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, Kylie Minogue and Gary Coleman from TV's "Different Strokes" - but has never received a birthday card from any of them.

After completing a degree he has never used (Librarianship and Information) in Brighton, he moved to London to attend drama school in the 1990's. He worked as a professional actor and director for a number of years mostly in theatre, but also making very brief appearances on the TV in series such as 'Inspector Morse'.

After setting up his own theatre company, he decided to move into theatre management and worked as Administrator and Programmer of the UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, before becoming the first General Manager of The Young Vic Theatre. He was part of the management team for the major redevelopment of the theatre building and in 2004 when the theatre won an Olivier Award for their entire season of work.

Mark then moved to Sheffield - the friendliest city in the world - to take up the role as the first Executive Producer of Sheffield Theatres, working across the three venues of The Crucible Theatre, Studio and The Lyceum Theatre.

After twenty years working in professional theatre it was then time for a change and he set out on his own. He created Marmalade Photography (named after the colour of his cat, Henderson) and won the award for Best Wedding Photographer in Yorkshire for three consecutive years. He also managed to appear (and win) 'Come Dine With Me' on Channel 4, direct half a dozen major community musical theatre productions and meet and marry his husband, Martin.

In 2019 he and Martin became 'jubilados' or retirees in the Valencia region of Spain. Since retiring Mark has begun to write, with the ambition of producing warm, fun, moving books that he cannot seem to find in bookshops.

Brilliantly written. Extremely insightful. Incredibly endearing. Suberly witty.
I Loved this follow up to the 1st book in the Rye Rooftop Club.
Just in case you've not read the 1st The Rooftop Club, they are a group of people who live & work in Rye & have become a wonderful, supportive, caring friends (like a family). It's so well written that you can't help but love the characters & want to be part of such a fabulous group of friends.
I loved following their journeys & the adventures they got up to. It was also great to meet new characters & just enjoy the laugh out moments but also learn so many lessons about life, friendship & family!

Again: not well-written at all (self-published) but a good enough story to keep you reading, and nostalgic for me being set in Rye.
