Ideal for fans of James Oswald, M.W. Craven and JD Kirk, Be Sure Your Sins is the first in the brilliant new crime series by Harry Fisher, starring Edinburgh detective Mel Cooper. She takes no crap, not even from the bad guys.
Six people
Six events
Six lives destroyed
What is the connection?
Detective Melissa (Mel) Cooper has two major investigations on the go. The first involves six apparently unrelated individuals who all suffer inexplicable life-altering events.
Mel is also pursuing a serial blackmailer but just as she’s about to prove the link between this man and the six bizarre events, she's ordered to back off.
So why are her bosses interfering with her investigations? Who are they trying to protect? And how far will they go to stop her?
The answers come from a totally unexpected source.
PRAISE FOR BE SURE YOUR SINS'Brilliant read.' Susan Hampson'I was completely hooked from the first few chapters ... cracking book' Janet Rose'I was immediately gripped by the opening chapters and ended up reading it in a day because I HAD to know how it ended ... humdinger of a crime story' The Untidy BookshelfWHAT THE READERS SAY'I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mandy H.'I've read it twice and would happily do so a third time.' Anna W.
I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author writes with such eloquence, and his descriptions of human behaviour had me laughing away until the early hours. He is definitely not a dour Scot! He obviously has an elucidatory knack for watching people’s behaviour and every little detail is there. The things we take for granted, I thought “oh dear, I do that”! He packs so much into his books, that you feel like you know the characters inside out and if you moved next door, you would know all their foibles. I even found my own idiosyncrasies in the characters, especially Mel’s husband with stacking the dishwasher!
However, I digress. The tale is one of revenge, and as I’ve said before in other reviews, it’s a dish best eaten cold. I had no idea who was behind it all, but six people are targeted for something, but no one appears to have a link. So what does link them all together. Mel has her work cut out to find out the common denominator, but someone somewhere doesn’t want her to. Who is behind it all, you’ll have to read this exciting book to find out.
5 ⭐️ stars plus for me. I can’t believe I’ve not found Harry before, as I read a lot of Noir Scottish crime, and they usually pop up. Never mind, he’s on my fantastic fiction and Amazon watch list now.
Fans of police procedural thrillers are going to love this!
I was completely hooked from the first few chapters, where a handful of life altering but seemingly unrelated crimes are happening to seemingly unrelated people.
DS Mel Cooper, our main protagonist, is currently in the middle of a major investigation into a blackmailer when she hears of these new crimes and in a gut feeling Gibbs would be proud of, she feels there is a connection between these crimes. She just has to find it.
With the help of her brilliant team she chips away at the individual cases confident she will find the link.
We get to know so much about Mel through her actions and thoughts and I feel she is portrayed extremely well. She is mum to 2 children and her 15 year old daughter has a new boyfriend she has concerns about. But she can’t use her position to investigate his background .... can she?
A cracking book, extremely well planned and written. Short choppy chapters make it easy to read. I have no idea how the author managed to write the connections so well between the crimes and the criminals and also keep so much hidden until near the conclusion. The planning process must have been military level! And just when I thought it was all neatly wrapped up there was yet another revelation!
I never once felt I was lost as sometimes can happen with a lot going on and many characters. The characters are all so well written and all so different it is easy to picture them and keep on top of what is happening. The action really hits another level towards the end and I was glued! I galloped through the book in just a couple of days.
A very easy 5 stars and an author I will be reading again.
“BE SURE YOUR SINS” by writer Harry Fisher is the first in a new crime series featuring Detective Sergeant Melissa (Mel) Cooper and is a fine example of #ScottishNoir at its best.

I liked how at the start of the book Mel introduced herself to the reader. She’s a very likeable character, an excellent police woman, dedicated mother and wife and I enjoyed listening to her voice throughout, as I found her to be a realistic and ‘normal’ person. When she was out walking with her daughter, I literally felt I was with her every step of the way and as a parent myself I could relate to her issues and worries about her daughter’s new boyfriend. I found this book to be a traditional police procedural, being privy to the full investigation step by step with no omissions. Together with clear, precise detailed descriptions, narrative and actions, you can distinctly picture the scene, therefore allowing a full connection between the reader and the story. There are a lot of characters at the start, as the plot does involves six situations and various people involved in each. So I do admit to it taking some concentration on the readers part, to follow how the events maybe connected. Once you’re into full flow of the situations though, they do make sense and the characters stay in your memory. I was caught out with the denouement, being cleverly plotted and I thoroughly enjoyed the progression of the investigation and how Mel and her team finally pieced it all together. “Be Sure Your Sins” and its creator Harry Fisher, would give many a top name, crime thriller author a run for their money and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it, if your love of crime stories involves a detailed investigation.
I began to read this book, then stopped and read the blurb again. I had wondered if I was reading a selection of short stories as each one sort of came to an end and a new story began, but I wasn’t. Just be patient, and all will be revealed.
The opening chapters are very different, with each one having a crime committed and someone being arrested for it. All of the accused protest their innocence, but the cases seem cut and dry. Of course, for every crime, there has to be a victim, and on one occasion it happened to be the mother of a serving officer. There is something rather weird about it all. DS Mel Cooper is soon looking into local crime a little deeper, with surprising results.
The story is on the gentler side of crime, with nothing gruesome or grisly and more on the Cluedo side of investigating as to why and how certain events are linked. The story is thoroughly entertaining. Even on the short breaks, I had to take, while life got in the way, my mind was trying to get in front and work out who was responsible for the tangle of cases.
Although this is a new series, I felt the central characters are already set up well for a second outing. This story was completely wound up, so it could easily be read as a stand-alone.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and how all the stories came together. I live in Leith and knowing all of the places and street names made it all the more real.
I loved this book, at first I couldn’t understand how the six events that occurred were going to make a story…but as I continued to read, it became a complex and weaving plot that had me gripped.
DS Mel Cooper leads the team investigating these crimes, in Edinburgh. She’s a feisty and clever Detective and with her team they uncover plots of blackmail and hate, which hits her close to home!
Fantastically well written, with wonderful descriptions of Edinburgh and some really clever plots, an intelligent and unputdownable thriller of a book.
An engaging crime novel involving blackmail, revenge and police corruption, written with wit, authenticity, attention to detail and great skill. The main character, a female detective sergeant, is likeable and well drawn, and the connections between the crimes provided a tantalising puzzle for the reader. I liked that the crimes committed were unusual yet realistic rather than the deadbodyfest of many modern crime novels.
The first in the DS Melissa Cooper and a great start, although there were so many characters introduced in the first few chapters I did find it difficult working out who was who. But stick with it. Once the connections start to become clearer the story, a tale of revenge and greed, starts to move along apace.
Briefly, six people, seemingly unrelated, all suffer life changing events; from homes raised to the ground by arson to allegations of rape. DS Mel Cooper and her team are investigating this alongside a separate investigation into a dangerous blackmailer. When Mel starts to find links between the two cases she finds her investigations being hampered from above, and ultimately she is ordered to stop. Who is pulling the strings? How are the various victims connected? Can the team prevent a miscarriage of justice?
The characters are well written and I enjoyed the interplay between Mel’s team members. This is a good police procedural, fast paced, with a lot of different threads, cleverly interlinked. I look forward to reading the next in the series to see how the characters develop. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
DS Mel Cooper and DC Andrew Young are investigating a blackmailing case. An elderly pensioner, Rhys Harding, is being blackmailed by a journalist, Ian McLure, who has ‘incriminating’ photos showing Rhys with two young women. Ian wants to expose Rhys as a sexual predator preying on young, vulnerable females.
Mel believes Rhys’s story that he was framed and sets off to dig deeper into the shady world of Ian McLure…
Meanwhile, there are six unusual cases happening in Edinburgh: dog kidnapping, rape, fraud, arson, and sexual misconduct. Cooper and her team look at those cases and it soon becomes clear that they are linked. How?
I loved this story from the beginning to the end. I devoured it (there is no other word to describe it) in two days.
Fisher has such an unusual writing style. The intricate plot was a huge strength of this book, there was a lot of thought put into it. I was trying to piece together the puzzle of how those cases were linked and the possible suspects. The execution was simply ingenious and I was lost for words at the end.
This is a superb and original crime thriller and I urge everyone to read it.
Wow, what a book and what an introduction to a new series and author. The story revolves around 6 different characters whose world falls apart in different ways. Seemingly all unconnected in everyone's eyes but the reader, so how can the police link them and investigate and solve the different crimes?
It was a bit confusing to start with, with all seemingly random events happening and gradually we see it's the work of the same person. It was nevertheless totally gripping and with the short snappy chapters, which I love, it just kept me wanting to read just one more. Before I knew it, I was a quarter the way through the book.
Mel is a good character and her team are terrific, all different and bringing different traits to the team. Even as things begin to slowly come together, there are plenty of further twists all the way to the end ensuring I was reading a bit open-mouthed. I've immediately bought the next book in the series and hopefully there will be plenty more to come.
At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book but it grew on me and developed tentacles to draw me in. My initial reservations are more to do with the style but I got used to it. If you start it and are unsure - do stick with it. By the time I was 30% of the way through, I was reluctant to put the book down to do anything else. It is a little different to most storylines in this genre. It does, however, have more red herrings than a fish market and nothing is entirely clear - until it is.
I found this a refreshing read because the main policewoman didn’t have a secret past a double life or major emotional issues. It was a very gripping storyline and I really enjoyed the story I cared about the characters (well not the nasty ones lol) and really wanted to know what happened next. I’m going on to read book 2 in the series.
This was a good easy enjoyable book , set in my hometown Edinburgh and particularly in Leith. Good story, good characters, well written, funny in places and not too violent. I am !looking forward to the next episode.
I think that the author has done really well with this debut novel. He has clearly spent a lot of time creating a puzzle within the story and plotting out his storyline. I did however feel that the story is very plot driven and sometimes the characters were added in to suit the plot. There are lots of great twists and turns in the story however it did not really grip me or encourage me to want to read the next chapter. This is probably just down to my view on it as I like character-driven stories and in this book the characters seemed a little hollow and we, as readers, did not get to know them well. Generally I would give the book a low 4 star rating as the story was well thought out but I felt that some parts were a little over complicated and with the number of main characters, for me, it was sometimes difficult to keep up with who was who. I will definitely be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future though. Many thanks to Hobeck Books and Harry Fisher for providing me with an electronic advanced review copy of the book in return for a honest and unbiased review.

This is the first in the brilliant new crime series by Harry Fisher, introducing us to DS Mel Cooper. She doesn't take any crap - not even from the bad guys. This is the first story that I have read by Harry Fisher, it certainly will not be the last. When I read about the six, I was uncertain how the plot would pan out. As the story commenced it became an intricate web that kept hold of me to the end. Harry Fisher's writing is so intelligible and descriptive it enables the reader to become embroiled in all aspects of the story. I am more than happy to recommend it.
If you’ve read my reviews before, you’ll know I love Scottish Crime. This is the first in the DS Melissa (Mel) Cooper series & is set in & around Edinburgh.
The book starts with two major investigations underway. The first involves the life changing events surrounding six unrelated individuals & their families. The second is a blackmail case. Mel & her team are about to link the two cases when she is told by her superiors to back off both of them & put them on the back burner. Why are they doing this & who are they trying to protect? The question is, how far can Mel push back against this order? Can she solve the cases in the limited time she has been given? Although the identity of the blackmailer is known quite early on, this does not detract from what is a gripping & intriguing story. The characters are believable & you are drawn in. A great, easy read with some real laugh out loud moments. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. Thoroughly recommended.
This is the first book I’ve read by Harry Fisher but it certainly won’t be the last. When six unrelated crimes come to light it’s down to DS Mel Cooper and her team to discover the truth behind the crimes. This really was a book full of twists and turns which kept me gripped from the first page till the last. Although there are multiple crimes involved, the way it is written made it very easy for me to read to keep up with the storyline. I also loved the way Mel and the team interacted with each other and in parts the humour was a wonderful addition to the story. Be Sure Your Sins had me hooked from the start and I’m looking forward to seeing what else Harry Fisher has in store for Mel and her team.
Six seemingly unconnected events that have devastating consequences – what a fascinating beginning and it had me hooked from the start. This book has everything you want in a crime thriller – fraud, blackmail, extortion, revenge, excellent and sloppy police work, terrific characters, superbly plotted storyline, red herrings, misdirection and some of the wittiest writing I’ve read for a long time. I absolutely loved this book – read it, you won’t regret it!
I found this one introduced too many different characters too soon and was a little too busy for me to properly absorb. Once it got going and they were imbedded I started to enjoy much more and found their link quite interesting and clever.
I have just finished my copy, kindly sent by you. Just loved this, gripping, great characters, page turning plot. Look forward to reading more from Harry Fisher.
