As the Queen of the Dead, I wield the power of mortality, commanding homage from man and god alike.
All save one.
The God of War, Nergal. He refuses to bow—refuses my sovereignty over life. The arrogance! He makes a mockery of the Underworld.
If only he would bend. If only those jade green eyes didn’t tempt my heart and see into my very soul. If only…
No! I cannot allow his insult to go unanswered. He will bow at my feet, or the armies of the dead will rise and consume the living. By the darkness, I swear.
Fans of Hades and Persephone will love this mythological retelling of the Marriage of Ereshkigal and Nergal from ancient Sumerian Mythology. This unlikely pair weaves a stirring tale of magic, longing, betrayal, lust, and love.
This epic love story includes adult situations and themes and is suitable for an 18+ audience!
This is the second book in the Myth Reimagined series. Each book contains a stand alone story, but the series contains a myriad of reimagined myths and legends. Creative adaptations are utilized in the retellings while the major aspects of the canon are maintained. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy!
A.C. Dawn is an active and enthusiastic author and reader of short stories, novellas, and novels. She enjoys bringing her characters to life and strives to stir the imagination of her readers. She believes the best writing touches the reader in ways they hadn’t expected and will never forget! So, that's the official bio... Really, I'm a lover of chocolate, a strong jaw line with a 5 o'clock shadow, and romances that make your heart pound and your middle get all squishy. I love quiet country living on my north Georgia farm with my family and fur babies of all shapes and sizes. I think the scariest thing in life is how fast my daughter is growing and an empty coffee pot. I can't stand slow drivers in the fast lane and wimpy handshakes. I have endless stories rumbling around among the rocks in my head. I can't wait to share them with you!
Ereshkigal was taken by Kur to the Underworld where she has been forced to reside. Taken from her family and the light of day, she dwells with the creatures of the Underworld as their queen. When her authority is questioned by the god of war Nergal, she plans to show him how much power she has.
This book is hands down one of my favorite reads this year. The story was so intriguing and gripping that I was hanging on to every word. The author brought their characters to life with phenomenal writing, and you just can't help but relate to Ereshkigal.
The ending had me a little mad, just because Ereshkigal went through so much effort to get her point across that she was a powerful queen who should be feared. It seemed like the ending undid some of what she worked for! But despite my complaint about the ending, the book is absolutely amazing and is 100% worth the read!
I enjoyed this story but feel it would have benefited from being longer and having more world building. While I am unsure of the mythology basis for this story, as I've never come across it before, I was frustrated by the main characters naivety and insistence on being with someone who was just horrible. I feel a longer more detailed story would have given insight as to why and made it more relatable perhaps. Otherwise it was well written and what little world building there was I found very immersive.
I am a huge fan of retellings of cultural mythos and the this book reminds me why. An amazing retelling that fans of mythology will LOVE. This book is perfect if you're looking for a quick read with action and enemy to lovers romance.
After The Sumerian Goddess of Earth, Ereshkigal, is kidnapped by the shadow dragon Kur a battle between the heavens and the underworld rages. Ereshkigal knows that this battle will destroy all that she loves so she pleads for the fighting to stop. Her father, the God Anu, father of all ends the war and makes her the queen of the underworld and grants her power over mortal death and judgement of souls. For millennia she is stuck in the shadow world never to see the light of day until an unexpected messenger comes bearing news of a banquet held in her honor which she can not attend. She decides to sneak in, in disguise, and here she meets Nergal, the God of War and discord,, who awakens color and feelings stronger than she has felt since she was kidnapped all those eons ago.
Growth, understanding, and finally acceptance. Love, death, and grief. Good characters, the story flowed well and didn't drag (I 100% read it straight through without stopping). I have to say I loved it. Definitely recommend.
This is a re-telling story. Queen of the Underworld, Ereshkigal, is at first a daughter of Anu, before she’s kidnapped by the dragon Kur and brought to the Underworld to rule. Anu after his daughters kidnapping, keeps balance between above and below with this agreement. Further into her story, after a marriage to the Great Bull, and children, we find the story setting. QotU is invited to attend a party in her honor hosted by her father Anu. Although she wasn’t going to attend she does and is dishonored by Negral the God of War. Refusing to stand for the slight she launches into a power struggle with Negral that leads her into and out of love.
First, let’s start by saying that re-tellings aren’t my particularly favorite genre of reading.
Second, anybody who writes a book deserves mad props. Pat yourself on the back.
Third, I wanted more from this story. I wanted to like the Queen but her constant flip-flop of emotions between “I’m a badass” to “I’m so unsure” was very conflicting. I did not like the duality of her personality, it rang false at times. Her duality continues with the love interest. Maybe the dragon Kur? No. Yes? No. Then there’s Negral, the God of War. The relationship was great, then not, then at the end it feels rushed back into a “happy ending”
All in all a solid read.

I got a arc copy of this book and wow! It’s fast paced the spice level is perfectly even with the story. I love all the characters and the myth retelling. If you love gods and romance then you need to read this book.
I absolutely LOVED this book!!! A BADASS goddess finding her light after so long in the dark. The only reason it wasn’t a 5 star for me is simply because of the ending. I just wanted more for Ereshkigal then that ending.
Seriously obsessed with this story! The way it's written is so smooth and effortless - giving the perfect amount of background history and details...and hellooo, let's not forget the tid bit of steamy scenes 🔥
