Stuck Duck by Brooke Vitale is a cute story about a duck who starts out having a great day until something unexpected happens. Duck is feeling happy, and he picks a flower, content to take it on a walk with him, but there are some monkeys blowing trumpets above him, and soon a trumpet lands on Duck’s head. The trumpet is stuck on his head, and Duck cannot remove it after several tries. Duck asks a girl, cat, and dog to help him, but the trumpet stays firmly affixed to his head. Moving from mad to sad, Duck enters the zoo, thinking that the day is the worst of his life. However, an animal at the zoo may be able to assist him in an unexpected way.
Brooke Vitale has written a sweet book about the emotions a duck feels as his day goes from happy to challenging. Stuck Duck has colorful illustrations that support the words on the page and bring life to the characters. Bright colors draw readers to the animals on the pages. The book addresses the emotions a child may feel if he or she is experiencing a good day, but a problem presents itself. Then, as the book progresses, the reader sees the way in which the duck processes his anger and frustration. The book is perfect for preschool-aged children who may have trouble handling their feelings after an unexpected occurrence. Additionally, children will love the drawings of the characters on the pages as they sympathize, or empathize, with the protagonist.
There really aren’t enough books like these on the market
When my kiddos were first learning to read, books like these were hard to come by. Sure, there are a lot of early readers out there, but many of them either (a) casually throw in words that absolutely frustrate a beginning reader or (b) don’t have an engaging (or even logical) storyline. I only found a handful of books that my kids really enjoyed reading and also were able to grow from at this stage. This book would have been absolutely perfect for them, and I’m sad it wasn’t around a few years ago! I absolutely recommend it to anyone to anyone with a kiddo who is learning to read!
This book is perfect for early readers. It has an engaging storyline and simultaneously reinforces high frequency words. Children will enjoy this sweet story, and will be happy with the ending. High interest books are important for early readers so that they can enjoy the story along with practicing their reading. The activities found at the end are wonderful as well.
Looking for beginner reader books to introduce your baby/toddler to reading or even test or challenge your young reader’s skills? Then this book is for you.
“Stuck Duck” is on of the first books in the “Charge into Reading” book series written by veteran author, Brooke Vitale.
What happens when a duck gets a horn stuck on his head? Well, in “Stuck Duck”, he tries everything and even gets some friends to help, but still he’s stuck. He’s not having a good day until a new friend comes along and makes his day so much better!
This simple and engaging book is designed to get your young reader excited about reading. The text is challenging enough to progress a new reader’s vocabulary and comprehension skills, while the stories are fun and informative. The illustrations are also bright, colorful and work perfectly well with the text to guide the reader along.
Young readers will enjoy having this book read to them, but will definitely enjoy the triumph of being able to read them themselves. Like other books in the series, this book also comes with literacy activities in the back to test skills such as vocabulary, reading comprehension and spelling.
The “Charge into Reading Series” is a win to both build and reinforce your child’s literacy skills!
Stuck Duck Teaches Us To Keep Trying To Solve Our Problem(s)
This is a beautifully illustrated book about a duck who tries (with the aid of humans and many animals) to remove a musical instrument stuck on its head. The solution is to handle the problem in a different way! Nice Q&A that tests memory, sequencing, writing, perceiving emotions, enunciating letter sounds and more. Great for young children up to about 8 yrs, including the children I tutor.
Love the imagery, think it's a very good style for this age group of kids. Story is nice in that it touches on different moods people naturally go through. Used the opportunity to talk about how it's OK to feel sad/mad/glad and how we can rely on our friends and family to work through or enjoy any of those feelings. Also has some good practice problems at the end of the tale. Nice addition to my godson's digital bookshelf!
