Written from the child's point of view, this book for young children tells a charming story of family. Though families may look different the common theme is love, making each puzzle piece a perfect fit.
‘Two dads as my family is the perfect fit for me!’ – A little treasure of a book!
Washington State author Cheramy Hassen is an adoption social worker as well as an adoptive mother and shares her perspective and experience in her books – THE STAR THAT WAS YOU, and now MY DADS AND ME. The illustrations for this charming book are by Sergio Drummond.
This little book is one of the finest approaches to adoptive same sex parents available today! Told from the viewpoint of a child, all aspects of adoption are incorporated in a subtle, open, loving, and entertaining manner, related in a lyrical rhyming pattern. As the book opens, ‘My two dads tell a story of how they dreamt of me. They searched the whole world not knowing where I’d be.’ And from a child’s stance the questions of who the adoptee will be, the traits, life style, the hopes and needs and expectations – all resolve as the little girl is adopted - “The day my two dads found me they knew I was the one. They laughed and cried and sang a song and said this is so much fun!’
Not only is this a highly successful children’s book, an excellent resource for explaining adoption to all children, both adopted and non-adopted, as well as the meaning of family to foster care children and surrogate or assisted fertility families, but it is also a salute to Family, and to same sex parenting – a book that will very likely receive awards on many levels! Very highly recommended.
My Dads and Me: How Lucky Are We By Cheramy Hassen and Sergio Drummond Published by Spotlight Media (August 28, 2021). ISBN: 978-1951806361
Charming! That is the one word that comes to mind as I read My Dads and Me. Hassen has a way with words that draw the reader into the story. Obviously, she loves her subject. It makes me wonder if she is talking about her own experience with one of her children and grandchildren. The love and care really bleed through each page.
Drummond has outdone himself with the beautiful drawings, which perfectly capture Hassen’s words and truly add to the story.
Whether you agree with LBGTQ+ adoptions or not, you must agree that Hassen has expressed the kind of love that transcends cultural norms, religious dogma, or societal trends.
The publisher sent me a copy of the book to review with no pre-agreed conditions.
