Kallie Marie’s ‘Conversations With Women In Music Production – The Interviews’ provides a well-written and welcome insight into the role of women in an area of the music business that has traditionally been the preserve of men. Through interviews with industry professionals, Marie seeks to better understand the pressures that women face when making this career choice. One aspect that exemplified the challenges faced was when female producers and engineers describe being ‘misremembered’ as singers, or non-technical contributors. The author doesn’t shy away from asking difficult questions about stereotyping, commitment and unwelcome sexual attention. She explores the ongoing tensions that surround gender in the recording environment, and how the industry might change for the better. From the interviewees comes a passion for their craft and a determination to succeed in this highly specialised environment.

This book is a must read for everyone in the arts. Kallie asks all the right questions to explore the depth of the issues facing women working in the arts. In addition to the value for women, both new to the business to see what they may encounter and long-time professionals to see that their experiences are shared, it is an invaluable resource for men in the business to see the challenges faced by women in our business. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to see a clear and cogent view of the barriers women have to overcome to succeed in music production and other related artistic fields.
