Sarajevo Firewood, which was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) award in 2020, explores the legacy of the recent histories of two countries ― Algeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina ― both of which experienced traumatic, and ultimately futile, civil wars in the 1990s. The novel narrates the lives of two main characters, with their friends and families: Salim, an Algerian journalist, and Ivana, a young Bosnian woman, both of whom have fled the destruction and hatred of their own countries to try to build a new life in Slovenia. As Ivana pursues her goal of writing her ‘dream play’, Khatibi’s novel brings to life in fictional form the memories and experiences of the countless ordinary people who survived the atrocities linking the two countries. As such, it represents both a lasting memorial to the thousands of dead and ‘disappeared’ of the two countries’ civil conflicts, but also a powerful and novel exploration of the experience of exile to which so many have been subjected over the last few decades.

اگر می‌خواهید "خاکستر سارایوو" را به خاطر "سارایوو"اش بخوانید کمی دست نگه دارید. "خاکستر سارایوو" به اندازه همان "خاکستر"ش به سارایوو ربط دارد و با وجود درج عبارت "داستان عشقی در میانه جنگ" در پشت جلد، چیز زیادی درباره خود جنگ در بوسنی و هرزگوین عایدتان نمی‌شود. با این حال سعید خطیبی، نویسنده الجزایری این کتاب با قلمی گیرا درباره "تن‌دادن به تبعید و دوری از وطن و زیستن در میان مردمانی بیگانه" داستان جذابی نوشته است. ترسیم درست جهان‌های موازیِ انسان‌هایِ در نگاه اول بی ارتباط با هم و تلاقی آنها در جهانی دیگر هنر نویسنده است که به خوبی از پس آن برآمده است. هنر دیگر نویسنده بیان جزییات شخصیت‌های بوسنیایی‌تبار داستان است که اگر حتی در بخش سپاسگزاری کتاب هم به آن اشاره نشده بود می‌شد فهمید که سعید خطیبی از نزدیک با مردم این منطقه و بخشی از فرهنگ و تاریخشان به خوبی آشنا شده است. طبیعتاً نمی‌توان از ترجمه خوب و روان سرکار خانم فرشته مولائی نیز چشم‌پوشی کرد و باید امتیاز قابل قبولی به آن داد. با این وجود چند نکته درباره این نسخه از کتاب به نظرم می‌رسد:اول آنکه با توجه به تمرکز بخش عمده‌ای از داستان بر جامعه الجزائرِ دهه نود میلادی و رویدادهای اجتماعی، سیاسی و امنیتی این کشور در آن سال‌ها لازم بود مترجم در مقدمه‌ای به شکلی خلاصه به بیان آنها می‌پرداخت تا ذهن خواننده برای درک بهتر بستر اجتماعی داستان آماده شود. پیشنهاد می‌کنم قبل از خواندن کتاب، "جنگ داخلی الجزایر" را جست‌وجو کنید.دوم، با وجود تلاش مشهود مترجم در جست‌و‌جوی کلمات، عبارات و اصطلاحات مربوط به زبان صربوکرواتی، هنوز عباراتی هستند که به درستی ترجمه نشده‌اند و یا در نگارش ایراداتی دارند؛ مانند استفاده از عبارت جبل الاسود برای مونته‌نگرو، شرناگورکا به جای مونته‌نگرویی، باشتشارشیا به جای باشچارشیا (با وجود آنکه در اولین بار استفاده درست نوشته شده است) و نمونه‌های دیگر که مرتبط با زبان و فرهنگ منطقه بالکان هستند. از این حیث مترجم می‌توانست از کمک یک مترجم صربوکرواتی (بوسنیایی) بهره بگیرد تا ایرادات این چنینی را به حداقل برساند.سوم، اولین بار بود که از نشر معتبر ثالث به صورت اینترنتی خرید می‌کردم. اگرچه همه چیز به شکلی منظم و دقیق انجام شد اما متاسفانه نسخه‌ای که به دست من رسید دارای ایراد چاپی بود و در صفحات متعددی برخی از کلمات چاپ نشده بودند.

In Firewood of Sarajevo Khatibi takes us in a historical era,a time of war and he finds the similarities and the connection and compares between the survivors of wars in both Algeria and Sarajevo.
In a beautiful descriptive language he portrays the landscape that all my senses became alert. He also conveys the feelings,the sufferings ,the pain of the neglected survivors of war and its impact on their lives and future.
Khatibi has portrayed the challenges faced by the protagonists, Salim and Ivan who both fled their destroyed countries which its people are divided by war and hatred. Both protagonists start a new life in Slovenia ,however the ugliness of war and the wounds it left still lingered and effected their lives there.
An interesting historical narration which is the result of patient research by Khatibi in archives and
asking survivors in both countries.
I highly recommend this book not only for its literary value but its historical value as well.
The book reflects the common impacts of wars and destruction on mankind worldwide.

That was an incredible book. Just beautiful
“Sarajevo Firewood” has somewhat refurbished history, for humans alone were capable of sketching and generating that history through their hopes, anxieties and aspirations. It is the novel of the other with whom we share the same history and the same agonies, written with an Arabic plume; and this is what makes it distinctive.
