The Three Hares: The terracotta horse
Salma Mansour is a black belt in taekwondo, a skill she will have to use soon to stay alive. One second, she’s in the British Museum, the next a thousand years away in a battle between the Saxons and Vikings. And she’s supposed to help? Things momentarily brighten when she encounters Sara and Sanjeev, who seem to understand. They don’t have much time to plan though; without warning, all three are transported to Xi’an, stronghold of Chan, a wealthy gang leader bent on immortality. Chan has kidnapped world famous geneticist Lin Dan and assembled fragments of an ancient magic. Chan will stop at nothing to fulfil his dream... even if it means releasing forces far beyond his control. The Three Hares must work together to defeat Chan and the power that controls him ... or else.?

I really enjoyed this book which is the 3rd book in the Three Hares series, but a really good standalone.
We meet Salma first, who then bumps into Sara and Sanjeev whilst going to meet her mum at the museum she works in. The adventure starts quickly and plunges you into a fast paced, past and present journey with the three trying to save the world.
There is plenty of history and ancient history in this book, very well researched and described brilliantly. I’ve now got the other books in my basket to carry on the series.

This is such a brilliant adventure story which I couldn’t put down! Salma, who loves taekwondo is trying for her red black belt when she sees something strange outside the window. A stranger’s face on a bus contorts and changes before disappearing. Later Salma is travelling on the Tube and hears a voice in her head telling her to do something dangerous. Soon she has a terrifying experience on the tube itself and begins to question what is happening to her. When she gets to the British Museum to meet with her mother who works there, Salma is already not feeling right, but something strange occurs as she’s heading through one exhibition, and she suddenly finds herself transported into the past, to the Battle of Maldon in 991CE.
This is such an interesting story, the third in a series though I was told this would work well as a standalone which for the most part it does. Salma starts experiencing strange things and soon ends up transported into the medieval times and encounters a Viking invasion! Not all is as it seems though, even though travelling into the past is strange enough, and soon Salma discovers the real reason she ended up travelling there. I don’t want to give the story away, but this is the third in the Three Hares trilogy, with the first two books introducing Sara and Sanjeev, who end up meeting Salma in this book. I like what happens as the three teens find themselves facing those behind their strange experiences and the task they are then given together using the interesting objects they were gifted.
The story weaves between the past and present, I really enjoyed what happens during the Battle of Maldon and what Salma ends up discovering about her special object there and the way she handles herself. Later the story takes place in modern day China too which was interesting and so exciting too! The story is so gripping and dark in parts, I especially like the creepy moment Salma has on the London tube train. That was an especially creepy moment and it made me really want to find out what was going to happen with the rest of the story. There are also lighter moments too, the banter between the teens especially with Sanjeev is funny and I like how the three teens end up working together in a dramatic build up to the ending.
The ending is very good, I really didn’t know what was going to happen in the story and I do love what does happen and how things end for the teens as well as some of the other characters. Overall the ending is so brilliant and exciting and although this book is good on its own, I do think it would have been a much better read if I’d read the first two parts of the trilogy first, as it introduces both Sara and Sanjeev who do briefly mention the things that happened to them in their own adventures. I do feel like I missed out on something by not reading those two books first and now I’m eager to read those two books though it would have been better to do this the correct series order! 🙂 There is a list of characters at the end of the book, as well as the odd typo that bothered me😬, and the book is printed on a more yellow coloured paper which I find is easier on the eyes to read. I also love the Three Hares symbol that appears on various pages as it’s also mentioned in the book. The story is so exciting and brilliant and I would recommend it although you’ll probably find more enjoyment if you read the first two books in the series first.

The Three Hares: The Terracotta Horse is the third book of the series but this is our first delve into the Three Hares. We wanted to review it because my eldest is a big fan of mythology and I think it is pitched perfectly for the age group which is unusually in the books I’ve reviewed in the Middle Grade genre recently which all seem a bit more to the older end of the scale; but this book feels a perfect fit for all ages middle grade (and adults!).
We first meet Salma and learn more about her back story before she coincidentally bumps into the other two protagonists in the story at the museum and what follows from there is a whirlwind across eras and time. I love the representation of strong female characters (being a mum of two amazing girls) and the diversity of the characters in general. The era’s of history, viking and ancient chinese might sound like a strange combination but actually it was super engaging and really interesting, my daughter loves all things viking so this was right up her street but also taught her something about other cultures.
We loved this one, whether as a read alone for confident readers or one you read together it’s perfect for both and I looked forward to reading a chapter or two of this one with my daughter as much as she did! A great recommendation from us and the other two books are already on the Christmas list (for both of us!!)
