It is estimated that there are over a million professional voice actors in the world. I heard the audiobook of this memoir, rather than the Kindle edition (no audiobook version is given on Goodreads at the moment). It seemed insane to learn about the life and work of Peter Dickson (the best male voiceover in the world... probably, and certainly one of the most well-known) in any other way.
There's a lot to enjoy and clearly Peter has a great sense of fun as well as many years of VO experience to draw on for his tales! I was a little surprised at a couple of remarks that I thought were a bit unkind, but hey, I wasn't there, so I don't know whether in fact he was being quite restrained in the telling. And when you've been at the top of the tree for as long as Peter has, you can probably afford to alienate two or three people, if you haven't already managed to do it!
Like I say, there's a lot to enjoy, and many tales of escapades to share. It was educational as well as entertaining, although the world of VO has changed so much over the course of his long career that reading this book wouldn't be the best investment of your time or money if you wanted to get into VO today. Try Gravy for the Brain (which Peter co-founded) for that, if you're interested.
We hear them every day but never stop to think of the life of the ubiquitous voice over artist. Peter Dickson has arguably one of the best known voices in Britain but his story has remained an insider secret until now. From the 2012 Olympics to the Steve Wright Show, from fantastic showbiz anecdotes to the brutal realities of his profession it’s all here in unflinching and laugh out loud detail. If you like your show business gossip juicy then these pages are packed with it and you’ll hear THAT voice in your head as you read. A brilliant look at radio tv and all other forms of entertainment over the last 40 years and a total page turner.
Audiobook: An icon of voice acting and a humorous read, but unfortunately I am unfamiliar with much of his work from the BBC and a lot of his announcer engagements. That would probably make it better
Great stories and entertaining funny. Such a brilliant read I roundabout it down. The story about Hammond and also beach volleyball were hilarious. Excellent read!!!
