Five years ago, celebrated Dutch photographer Theo Baart relocated his family to Bijlmermeer, an area in the southeast of Amsterdam built up with high-rise projects according to modernist urban planning principles. An experiment in social engineering that went wrong, notorious for its intractable social problems and crime, Bijlmermeer is currently undergoing a 15-year regeneration scheme, which transformation Baart has been recording with his camera.
Theo Baart photographs cities and its surrounding landscapes. He is interested in the friction between urban planning and the spontaneous spatial dynamics. How does our environment look like and what does that say about us? He answers these questions with his projects.
