Janet Louise Roberts was born on January 20, 1925, in New Britain Connecticut, the daughter of a missionary in a conservative church. She wrote contemporary, historical, and gothic romances, as well as occult horror romances such as The Devil’s Own, Isle of the Dolphins, Lord Satan, and Her Demon Lover. She used pseudonyms for several of her works.
More Gothic romance than mystery. Could be considered romantic suspense. This book is set during the War of 1812, but the author makes some historical errors. For example, one character is a Russian Jew, whose family was wiped out some years earlier in a pogrom. However the first pogrom had yet to happen. In addition, this man's surname was Livingston — neither Russian nor Jewish! Then there are the so-called "federal agents"; but the United States was years away from truly establishing any such organization. Despite these flaws, it was an enjoyable bit of fluff.
