Product of the pandemic prompts a view of the future.
Patrick Frank would not have written this book if the pandemic had not happened. He admits a different way of working or approaching making of videos was a necessity because the traditional way his company made them was no longer possible. Personal anecdote is backed up by extensive references at the end of the book, but annotated in the text too. There is a logical flow from describing the previous method to using Zoom recordings and then discussing the limitations of platforms like Zoom in creating real presence and interaction. Other software and platform creation is described and discussed for what it can bring to the problem. I particularly resonated with the discussion on the value of meetings and Our Time (shared on the meeting) and My Time (personal preparation, reviewing - including literal viewing - and reflection) with the latter being under personal control for timing and intensity and not forever at the tyrannical mercy of a demanded meeting. Focusing upon output rather than time taken or being present is another helpful concept advocated. The thesis of starting with the creation of a video is then taken into other situations like events, webinars, forming communities (using extended reality platforms) marketing, healthcare and education. The latter is the only one where the author feels behind the curve as several of the ideas he proposes were being implemented five years ago. The general format is of relevant anecdote followed by introduction of tools and/or software, concepts with discussion and a summary at the end of ,most chapters. This last feature will help those wanting to skim and opting for in-depth reading if the summary piques their interest It is a bright, breezy, shining new book and is fresh off the press, my reservation is that it could quickly become out of date as platforms evolve and change happens quickly in this field.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I just finished this. Super interesting. I started reading a few weeks before the election and it already inspired me to try some videos for my election officer training since I have the power through my iPhone. As a public policy geek, though, my favorite chapters were at the end on healthcare and education. Great writing!
