My starting point for ‘Return to Mansfield Park’ was the many questions raised by the ending of ‘Mansfield Park’. What happened to Mary and Henry Crawford, for example? They are both highly eligible, attractive people, with independent fortunes – can they put the Bertrams behind them and carry on with their lives? What about Tom Bertram? He is a reformed character by the end of Austen’s novel, and it would be his duty marry well and bring more money in to the family – so who does Tom marry?Would Fanny and Edmund really be happy together, or would Edmund regret turning Mary Crawford down?'Return to Mansfield Park' starts with the exiling of Maria Bertram Rushworth to the countryside with her Aunt Norris. This is cruel and unusual punishment indeed; will Maria put up with this, or will she attempt to escape?Reader, read on! All will be revealed!
While I really enjoy retellings and sequels of Pride and Prejudice, I also love hearing what happens to characters of other JA novels, and I think Hallett did an excellent job coming up with a (fairly) believable story. A few scenarios were a bit contrived- but then, so we’re all the chance meetings between Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. This sequel was generally well-written- one of the few things that bothered me was a lack of continuity in the timeline at some points- but this was easily passed by. I appreciate Hallett taking it on!
