These are accounts from the FDNY’s War Years by Captain Bob Farrell (Captain, Ladder 31, retired). Ladder 31, along with Engine Company 82, were among the busiest units in the city of New York from the late 1960s through the 1970s. Captain Bob Farrell is the real deal and among the many stalwarts of those "War Years." He is the recipient of numerous FDNY medals and awards, including the James Gordon Bennett Medal, the highest medal given out by the FDNY, until 2020. These accounts give insight into the history of the City of New York during that era.
Dis guy was dere. This is a firefighters book. Written by a living legend. Anyone knows this guy, drinks are on me.
Read this as a " supplemental" to Report from Engine Company 82. This was the Lieutenant and the Captian mentioned there.
This guy was there, doing it as the joke goes when everything was burning down around him. Purveyor of the biggest house with the biggest fires during the busiest years of FDNY, also the inventor and practitioner of many fire tactics that are still used today.
This book is facinating from a history stand point, focusing on the implementation of such great tactics of the K 12 and why it is called that, the trench cut, the coffin cut, the Pro Bar and the shove knife.
He writes it as a series of antecedents and asides, short and quick to the point. This is a collection of stories from the War Years. He is not too focused on plot or progression, instead tracing a broad path through his career.
He is supremly humble. Making references to helping out nuns, kids and helping and loving Da Job.
The fin coda is a support call for the Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Foundation and Conference. If you are looking to donate money, this foundation is an amazing place to start.
Bob Farrell and Joe Kearny did a great job with this book. Not many of these men left from this era in the FDNY. Farrell also incorporates some pretty good humor for this book while telling his story. Definitely read this book if your a firefighter. Good lol tricks of the trade in here for firefighters also.
I so enjoyed the stories that Bob shared in this book, especially the stories about Chief Eckert, my grandfather. No doubt these stories I will revisit over and over again and they are precious to me.
What a great book! A quick read with lots of great stories about the greatest job in the world. Bob fought fire during one of the most exciting times to be a fireman in the FDNY. You will see many others mentioned in the book that are also legends within the fire service and FDNY. Highly recommend this book!
