Sentinals #3

Sentinals Justice

Rate this book
Sentinals Justice is the third book in the saga of Remargaren, a vibrant, ancient world of high fantasy suffused with magic and adventure.

The third installment of the Sentinal series takes us to the frozen north, to the Grand Duchy of Elothia. Border tensions with Elothia force King Benedict to send a diplomatic envoy to sue for peace. Benedict has his hands full with Vespiri and Terolia, he can't afford a war on his northern border as well. Commander Jerrol Haven is sent to broker peace. Having met Grand Duke Randolf the thirteenth before, Jerrol hopes their previously successful negotiations will assist in a speedy resolution and allow him time to discover how to rescue Birlerion from the Ascendants.

Meanwhile, the Chapterhouse has received a request for a scholar to assist in searching for signs of the Sentinals in Elothia. Taelia is assigned the task, because Scholar Torsion is also missing after the attack at the Watch Towers.

Amidst escalating tensions and conflicting needs, Jerrol journeys to Elothia, hoping to meet with Randolf before the Ascendants can influence him. Escorting Taelia is an unexpected bonus. Can Jerrol stop Elothia and Vespiri from going to war? Will they find more Sentinals? And can they find out where the Ascendants took Birlerion and Torsion before it is too late.

Sentinals Justice concludes the opening trilogy...though the adventure will continue!

Once again, Garraway amazes me with her intricate and amazingly in depth story and worldbuilding. The details, the characters, the layer upon layer of nuance is exactly what one would want in an epic fantasy. This is a big book in a series of big books, and not a single chapter goes to waste. Did I get choked up at the end? Mayhap. But you'll have to read for yourself to find out why. Highly recommend to lovers of long fantasy epics.

A transcendent finish to a marvelous fantasy trilogy!

A memorable and worthy cast, led by the indomitable Captain Jerrol Haven, brings this story into harbor - not without sorrow, not without careful effort, and definitely not soon to be forgotten. Jerrol and Berlerion, in particular, moved me as they struggled to overcome incredible obstacles. The trauma they both experienced in the previous installment, coupled with their situations herein, hurt my heart (in the best way).

The build-up to, and conclusion of, the climax left my breathless. Helen Garraway is masterful in her writing and characterization, and I can't wait for the next adventure in her stunning, fully dimensional world. In short, The Sentinals Trilogy doesn't disappoint!

A warning to more sensitive readers: There are several bedroom scenes, which don't seem to get explicit, but as I'm a sensitive reader myself, I skipped ahead and read on. There is also more strong language in this installment than in the previous two, if that's an issue for you.

**I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.**

Now, epic fantasy is not my usual cuppa, BUT I liked this one. It’s got impressive world building - kind of felt like LOTR crossed with Game of Thrones - I could totally picture this broken down into episodes with different themes (action, betrayal, loss and struggles but also romance). Remargaren is plagued by Ascendants & their evil deeds. A person ascends when the dark side of the soul takes over (or a demon, if you wish) and even the do-gooders called Sentinals can be turned. An epic fight between good and evil is a must of the genre. I loved the snappy dialogue and I think Jerroll’s and Taelia’s love story will keep the romantic readers happy. The deities - the Lady, Leyandrii and Marguerite - were a mix between Ancient Greek Persephone myths, holy (all-female) trinity and reference to Mary. While I was initially confused by the background story and unfamiliar names, I did read this book #3 cold and I would strongly suggest to read books 1&2 before. Recommended for lovers of epic and high fantasy with a dash of romance.

In the third book, Sentinals Justice, Jerrol and Taelia are sent to Retarfu accompanied by two Sentinals to Duke Randolf's Palace to try and negotiate a peaceful treaty. With the Ascendants influence, Jerrol is wrongfully imprisoned, thrown in the cells and badly beaten. Then he is taken from Retarfu and conscripted into the Duke's army where he comes across Birlerion. Both men have been beaten so badly that they have suffered memory loss and don't recognise each other. After finishing training, both are sent with their squad to Retarfu to protect the Duke. It is here that Taelia helps Jerrol regain his memories with a deep and loving kiss. Jerrol leaves Retarfu through a secret passage to continue his quest for the Lady and when she next speaks with him, she tells him that she must break her link to him, a necessary ploy to help defeat the Ascendants. Leyandri's two sisters; Marguerite and Asilirie now enter the quest as they have important roles to play in assisting Jerrol to rescue the Duke's betrothed and also soldiers of the King's army. As the final battle at the Oprimere Plateau approaches, Jerrol and his sentinals prepare for the inevitable with the help of Lady Leyandri.
There is a mystical strength and a fulfilling magnetism in Helen Garraway's books that few writers can attempt to compare with it. She is without doubt a naturally gifted 'Master Storyteller' and deserves overwhelming credit and praise for her magnificent Trilogy. I wish to thank her personally for the many hours of sheer joy and deep satisfaction that I experienced from reading her wonderful, irresistible and completely satisfying books. Thank you Helen. E.K.

What a trilogy! After having finished both Sentinals Awaken and Sentinals Rising, I had high expectations. I've come to love Garraway's descriptive writing - filled with complex characters in a fully realized world - and she did not disappoint. The story well and truly pulls you in; I was so invested by the end (you'll see what I mean when you read it)! A highly recommended fantasy trilogy for both seasoned fantasy-veterans as well as newcomers to the genre.
I received an arc and I'm leaving my honest review voluntarily.

Okay… So the overall story is very interesting… But the writing! Good God the writing! I have never met an author with amnesia but I feel confident this author and her editor have it! Holy crap does the writing contradict itself consistently! CONSISTENTLY… I actually was keeping a list of all the funny things that just didn’t make sense or completely contradicted each other! I will keep reading these stories because they themselves are interesting but wow… I mean WOW does this author need to fire her editor!

Just a small example…

“That’s how he lost his fingers, the Ascendant Var’geris, your advisor,” Book 3

“”Shred the veil,” Ain’uncer whispered close to his ear. Jerrol jerked and the Ascendant smiled, running his tongue over his lips. He moved the knife to the next finger.” Book 2

Seriously! I mean seriously! There are countless examples even in the same book…

I will keep reading this book but man is the writing painful while the story good!

I'm so commited to this amazing series. Helen Garraway has created such an incredible world. I was over joyed to receive this copy of the third installment but had to literally prise it off my mother first who is as obsessed with this series as I am!

"ꜱᴇɴᴛɪɴᴀʟꜱ ᴊᴜꜱᴛɪᴄᴇ ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛʜɪʀᴅ ʙᴏᴏᴋ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴀɢᴀ ᴏꜰ ʀᴇᴍᴀʀɢᴀʀᴇɴ, ᴀ ᴠɪʙʀᴀɴᴛ, ᴀɴᴄɪᴇɴᴛ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ ᴏꜰ ʜɪɢʜ ꜰᴀɴᴛᴀꜱʏ ꜱᴜꜰꜰᴜꜱᴇᴅ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴍᴀɢɪᴄ ᴀɴᴅ ᴀᴅᴠᴇɴᴛᴜʀᴇ"

This third installment might actually be my favourite. The settings are stunning, it has a fast moving pace and even though it's more than 500 pages I raced through it.

Kudos to Helen Garraway for her inspiring work

This continuation was great! There was lots of character development and we got to discover secrets of main characters pasts. The battle scenes were very well written and the entirety of the book was filled with plot twists that you couldn’t predict! Highly recommend!

A totally magnificent, spellbinding read !!!!

I received an ARC copy of Sentinals Justice and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Helen Garraway has exceeded beyond all expectations with this 3rd Sentinals book. Just like her second book, it continues the story from where Jerrol fought hard to save King Benedict in Vespiri, losing trusted friends in the wake of the destruction, finally seeing him travel to the Watchtowers to seal the Veil. There he encounters the Ascendants, who torture both Jerrol and Birlerion to try to forcefully induce them to tear the Veil. Through the ensuing battle, Jerrol is saved, but mutilated, as they removed two fingers of his right hand for his defiance not to tear the Veil.

In Sentinal’s Justice we see Birlerion now in the hands of the treacherous Ascendants. Also lost is Zin’talia, Jerrol’s Darian Mare. Compounding this are the nightmares Jerrol experiences from his time at the Terolia mines, where so many people perished.

The continuation of Helen Garraway’s epic tale takes us through deceit, hate, loss and finally war. We see King Benedict despatch Jerrol on a mission to Grand Duke Randolf’s Palace, Retarfu, Elothia. He is to take Scholar Taelia with him to research findings found in the archives of the castle, as well as to make peace with Grand Duke Randolf as troops gather on the borders between the two lands, ready for battle. When he arrives, nothing is as it seems, the old Duke is Dead, with his son now ruling, and with the Ascendants having a firm hold on the Duchy, mayhem ensues.

Jerrol fights hard with his conscience after speaking with The Lady Leyandrii, as She decrees just what he must sacrifice and undertake to save the Land of Remargaren, and the veil. As the story progresses more Sentinal’s are awakened, some hidden underground. Additionally, we also see the emergence of Lady Leyandrii’s two Sisters Marguerite and Asilirie, who play crucial roles in the unfolding story.

Both Jerrol and Birlerion have gone through a ‘mind’ metamorphosis where neither knows the other, nor themselves, and it is not until Jerrol, finds himself imprisoned, beaten and pressganged into the Dukes army, that he believes he recognises Birlerion. Jerrol, slowly realises, within his sub-conscious, that they have been reunited by chance or circumstance once again to pitch the final attack, but at what cost, knowing that the lives and minds of so many - including his own - hangs in the balance if they are to accomplish their goal.

At the end of the great battle, we see six Sentinal trees appear, standing shimmering on the Oprimere plateau, looking down at the destruction and devastation below. Here I defy anyone when they read this chapter of the book, not to shed a tear, because if you don’t, then you have no soul!!

Finally, it is not until the last chapters that you realise the enormity of what has taken place, and who is left standing to tell the tale.

Helen Garraway’s remarkable Fantasy book is a tale that could be set in any century, at any time. The vibrancy of her characters is such that you take them to your heart, and experience every emotion that they feel, and the power of her words is so spellbinding, that you slowly lose your surroundings, as you are encapsulated into this world, standing there beside these characters, being a part of this epic tale playing out in your mind.

I have tried my best to do justice to this amazing book, but to write more would only take away from the reader, the beauty and profundity held within its pages, as it is for the reader to appreciate and interpret.

Even if Fantasy is not the genre of your choice, I would challenge anyone not to be swept up into this story and the charismatic lives of the characters of Remargaren in ‘Sentinal’s Justice’. It will change your view of this genre completely, and leave you, like myself, wanting more.

An amazing read, and I highly recommend it.

Harrowing, heartbreaking, and heroic – An Epic fantasy series, you’ll not want to miss!

I received this as an arc for my honest review. Having read Sentinals Awakening but not yet read Sentinals Rising, I had a little catching up to do, but with Garraway’s exceptional storytelling, it wasn’t too difficult for me.
I’ll start by saying this book is a tome, coming in at over 500 pages of epic-ness. The stakes have risen, lines blur between darkness and light, the ongoing war between Ascendants and Sentinals continues, and nobody is safe.
There are plenty of twists and turns as Jerrol’s adventure continues. This book has it all, amazing characters who will pull on your heartstrings, a well-developed world, a unique mythos, and a gripping story filled with action, love, sacrifice and betrayal. A brilliant series for fans who love delving into the secondary worlds of traditional epic fantasy, but with a new twist.

Epic Fantasy? Amazing Worldbuilding? Lengthy but goody book? Helen Garraway has it ALL in this series.

I have had the pleasure of reading books 1&2 which were absolutely spectacular, you should definitely go back and read them!

I finished up this book (book 3) over the weekend and I was not disappointed. I love the emersion of the characters, the world feeling so life-like around me as I'm reading. I love to visualize the stories unfolding before my eyes as I read and this one really let's you picture each detail, each character depth and all.

If you are a lover of Epic Fantasies, then join this ride because at the end you will NOT be disappointed.

Hanging over the edge. Death at the bottom of the drop. Clinging to the hope that someone stretches out a hand in time because he can’t hold on another second. That’s where Jerrol finds himself again, this time literally. Yet it has taken so many forms on this journey for him as the Lady’s Captain, the Oath Keeper, and everything that it has demanded of him. He’s made decisions that still tear at his soul in that role, and he’s lost so much. Lives he can’t bring back. That haunts him worse than the constant abuse his own body seems to find in this struggle, even when he’s certain he won’t live through the next confrontation, the next beating. Maybe the failure that haunts him worst is Birlerion, his closest sentinal, who is now missing. Jerrol needs to find Birlerion because Birlerion is more than a sentinel. He’s stood by Jerrol’s side from the beginning, from the moment Jerrol realized the tremendous role before him. More than that Jerrol knows him as friend, one that would never abandon him, that would gladly lay his life down for Jerrol. That’s why Birlerion is captured now by the Ascendants, enduring things that leave Jerrol in tears and finding their way into Jerrol’s worst nightmares. Jerrol knows it in his heart how his friend has to be suffering and is desperate to reach him in time. And Jerrol has never been wrong about Birlerion. We watch Birlerion, unknown to himself, still protecting his beloved Captain, his friend. It’s a beautiful testament to Birlerion but hardly unexpected with how we’ve come to know him. We understand Jerrol’s fierce loyalty for him.
Then there’s Taelia. Jerrol knew he loved her, but he finally has a chance at the future he dreamed of with her. She is stronger than he ever realized, and she sees in him what he can’t see in himself countless times. She’s far from blind. He was the blind one to have missed as much time with her as he did. Together they begin to unravel the threat upon Remargaren, and it looks like a promising start. However, the tide turns in a moment, and the threat is upon them, upon Remargaren. Jerrol hears his fate, the only means to finally bringing down the Ascendants. He should run away, but that’s not him. Jerrol has shown that repeatedly as we journeyed with him, and that’s why we love him and cry for him as he finds the strength to face this new battlefield. Jerrol’s role as Captain, as Oath Keeper, as Remargaren’s truest friend and hope will demand everything from him to save his world, those he loves. A sacrifice only he can give. He hangs over the edge again. Maybe for one final time.

Sentinals Justice is the third book in the epic fantasy series by Author Helen Garraway and I have to say is my favourite so far! The story picks back up with Jerrol Haven who is recovering from his previous confrontations with the Ascendants and the loss of two sentinals. Jerrol, however is thrust back into battle when the Ascendant focus on Elothia and use the Grand Duke’s army to achieve their goals. King Benedict sends Jerrol as a Diplomat to try and resolve hostilities and sue for peace, and his love interest, Scholar Taelia accompanies him when the Grand Duke request’s her assistance also.

I loved the drama and conflict throughout this book, and the way in which each character was challenged on a physical, emotional and mental level. The Author shows a different and much deeper side to them highlighting not only their vulnerabilities but their strengths too, thus making them more real, and furthering the connections already established with the reader in the earlier books. There are plenty of twist and turns along the way, the plot moving at a really good pace and keeping readers fully engaged in the story. The dialogue is relevant and there are no significant editorial issues to detract from the enjoyment of the book. There was an occasion when the intimacy scenes between Taelia and Jerrol were quite frequent and close together, and I found myself wanting to quickly skip past. But then this would be reflective of a young couple who are in the throes of first love, so this was easily forgiven and did not stop me from absolutely loving the story.

I therefore award a well deserved 5 stars.

Great Book but Now It's an Adult Read

Parents: Unfortunately this one has a couple of pretty detailed bedroom scenes, making this more of an adult read.
Language: PG
Violence: PG-13
Sexual content: R - two pretty graphic sex scenes, at least they were married but it felt unnecessarily detailed for this series

This has been a fun series and friendly to the younger middle school readers until you get to this book. The story and world stay very engaging and keep the fun complexity, but the relationship goes to the next level in this book and suddenly throws you into some pretty graphic bedroom scenes. I'm going to be honest and say that while I still really loved the book I was disappointed that I could no longer let my teens read them.

If you haven't read the first two just keep in mind that these are not stand-alone books, you do need to read them in order. It's a great series if you enjoy adventure, mystery, mind control, and deception.

The narrator has fantastic and diverse character voices!

Sentinals Justice is the third book in this series, and thing are really starting to heat up. The pace is much faster, and pieces of the worldbuilding are clicking into place in an exciting way.
What I loved:
Everything about Birlerion. His backstory, his personality, the depiction of trauma, the whole deal.
The exploration of what it would actually be like to be a sentinal, to spend so long watching and waiting. Super fascinating and really enriches the world.
Again, Jerrol's relationship with the Lady, his deity. Very believable and at times beautiful.
What I didn't:
Taelia. I found her character pretty bland, honestly, and she just never came to life for me the way other characters have.
The sex scenes. They felt so unnecessary, honestly, and kind of formulaic, if that makes sense.
Quibbles aside, this is really gearing up to be a great series (and I'm halfway through book four, which I'm enjoying even more! review to come once I've finished it).

a well written book series, thus far

I enjoyed the characters most of all. They came alive as Garraway created them full of life. I am glad to note that Helen Garraway gave the heroes faults. We all have them, and it is great that the author knows this. The scenery was beautiful. I feel as if I have seen the land like I was there. It was all so believable. The dialogue was spellbinding. It moved the story and your emotions on every page. The plot was fast paced, and was once again good versus evil, but the author made sure that the unexpected happened regularly and it constantly pulled the reader ever inward. I often found myself thinking about the story during my regular activities. I gave these first three books five stars, because perfection is always hard to obtain. But, WELL DONE!

I cannot say enough positive things about this series and its hero, Jerrol Haven. The word epic is inadequate to describe the sweeping majesty of world- and character-building the author has accomplished. The story thunders on toward its conclusion, with more and more demanded on its hero. In the end, who will prevail? Who will be lost? and Who will survive? I have loved this fast-paced, nail-biting, emotional saga, and I hope this is not the end of this world or these characters.

I subsequently received a free copy of the audio version, and I loved the richness it added to an already exciting and epic tale. The narration was fantastic. I highly recommend both the book and the audiobook.

Audiobook: I enjoyed book 3 of the "Sentinal Series" a lot. The Ascendants influence was rising, war was on the horizon, and two key players were missing. Commander Jerrol Haven was sent as a diplomatic envoy to the Grand Duchy of Elothia. Taelia accompanied Jerrol to complete her own mission. The story was convoluted and full of intrigue. There was plenty of action. I appreciated the characters and their interactions. I liked the humor and magic that flowed throughout the tale. Matt Coles' narration was awesome, and his performance added to the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Sentinals Justice by Helen Garraway, narrated by Matt Coles, is a thrilling continuation of the Sentinal series, transporting readers to the frozen north where tensions run high and peace is on the line. The author's vivid descriptions of the world of Remargaren are beautifully complemented by Coles' engaging narration, making for an immersive and captivating experience. With its intricate plot, dynamic characters, and non-stop action, Sentinals Justice is a must-read for fans of high fantasy who crave adventure and magic.

Magic and intrigue
This was book three in the series, but could be read as standalone. There is enough backstory woven through the narrative that all the characters are fully fleshed out as well as their relationships.
The story surprised me several times — I never knew what twist was coming next, which was great writing.
With war looming, there were plenty of action scenes and a tangled web of politics. The worldbuilding was top notch.
Matt Coles' narration was perfect for the story and he did a great job with all the different voices.

It appears that we will have a 4th book. Although the series with a few tweaks could have ended with the 3rd book. It seems the author changed her mind about how long the series should be. Considering that there are 4 "kingdoms" I am not surprised by this as we have not had the story of the 4th one yet, but considering this, it would have been better served to have had our "conclusion" in that book as opposed to the upcoming book 4.

While the world-building remains enchanting, some pacing issues persist. The middle chapters occasionally meander, leaving me yearning for more urgency. It lacks the relentless momentum of its predecessors. The intricate lore sometimes overwhelms, and the urgency wanes. Perhaps the frozen landscape dampened the fire that burned in the first two books. Still, it’s a worthy continuation, though the adventure doesn’t end here!

In book 3, we travel to Elothia meeting Lady Marguerite; sister to the Lady Leandrii. Our heroes face brutality that strips them to the core.
