Serving His Penance

Rate this book
Can their relationship survive the journey to redemption or will their penance be the end of their love?

Deep in their fight to protect the people of Cleveland from Dane Stevens' criminal empire, Cordero and Gideon are convinced their cause is just.

Until Cordero sees the human cost of their crusade—a failed bust that nearly kills the target and a young girl whose life has been thrown into chaos.

Gideon sees Cordero's change of heart as a threat, not just to their relationship, but to the chance at redemption for his own past.

As the fight against Stevens turns into an all-out war, Gideon and Cordero find themselves on opposite sides, and their fledgling love gets caught between what is right and what is just.

*** 3.5 ***
Same 3.5 stars as the first book but this time rounded down. The first half of the book was slow highlighting lack of communication between MCs and their fears. 2nd half was much better - Gideon making a friend, action, introduction of more magic and mysterious nun.
I really like Gideon and my heart broke for him when I learned his story. At the same time Cordero, with his constant doubts and thoughts about calling and greater good, annoys me. He is immature and selfish.

At some point I wished Gideon fall for Ted instead and that's not good for romance.
Still, I will read the 3rd book for sure. I want to see Gideon getting his happy ending and learn Ted and sister Jeanne story. I also hope we'll find out more about other magical creatures and Gideon's curse.

I have mixed feeling on this one. On the one hand, the excitement and danger gets turned up a notch which is always fun. But on the other hand, the lack of communication between Gideon and Cordero was driving me CRAZY! Nothing annoys me more than characters who won’t just talk to each other about how they feel. I know some people love that kind of angst, but I got enough of it in book one and was over it at this point.

That being said, there’s a lot to like about this book! I really loved that Gideon makes a friend in Ted, and I’m looking forward to more potential team missions in the finale. Jeanne was a really interesting character and I hope we get some more background on her! Also we get introduced to some actual paranormal-ness (besides Gideon) and hopefully book 3 will dig into that a bit more.

Overall a fun, if frustrating, read. Looking forward to seeing how this series ends!

After being cliffhanger’d nearly to bits last time (poor me), I was super eager to discover the fate of my new favorite daring duo.

Imagine my surprise when I find them both being colossal buttnuggets. About like, everything! I swear sometimes I rolled my eyes so hard, I could feel them threaten to go tumbling out and down onto the floor.

Trying to find their balance in this one is the epitome of the saying, “The struggle is real.” Before, I wanted to leap into the pages to pummel the bad guys and now—I also want to knock some sense into the good guys (seriously, no one is acting right this time around).

I hope, for their sake and mine, that they get their crapola together and figured out (ALL of their crapola, by the way. I have so many theories roaming around in my head about their situation it’s not farkin funny).

Whatever needs to happen, I was assured it would happen in the next and final book. My fingers are crossed because otherwise I might go completely bat crap crazy.

P. S. While I’m wishing for things here, might as well add another one. It’s my hope that these two see (and understand) that everything in this life isn’t black and white, all or nothing. Sometimes...
sometimes you need the gray, the balance.

This book was provided free from the authors in return for an honest review.

This is book two of the series and was a great continuation of the story. NOT A STANDALONE.
Gideon, the come-to-life gargoyle but only at night, and the now-ex Deacon Codero Cruz continue on… Their love seems so strong, but as winter approaches, it's getting harder for Codero to hide as they continue their self-appointed task of taking out Dane Stevens' drug organization. When Gideon gets hurt, Codero uses it as an excuse to stop and there's a lot of internal dialogue mimicked by both of them, neither feeling like the other one needs them. Help comes to both of them from two unlikely sources (very kick-butt characters whom I really want to know more about) and allows them to overcome this storyline’s mystery/struggles, but the ending left me stunned and wanting more.

There were some very interesting developments in this book that mostly made for a fast read, except when the two MCs got all up in their heads. Twice I had to get up and walk away because of the repetitive thought processes mirrored by both characters. Otherwise, I really, really liked this. Definitely not a standalone as the story picks up pretty much where the first ended. Looking forward to the conclusion of the trilogy.

First off, this is not a stand-alone. You need to read book 1 in order to get book 2.

In a continuation of book 1, Gideon and Cordero are continuing their crusade against Stevens. But, as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions and although they have the best of intentions, when dancing with a devil people end up getting hurt. Innocent people. When faced with that cold, hard reality Cordero loses his faith in the justness of their cause.

Gideon, of course, sees it as a rejection of both their common purpose and their relationship as well as a blow to his own personal path towards redemption. This, of course, creates cracks in the new relationship, and when Cordero returns to the church Gideon takes this as a rejection of him, of them, and of everything they were creating and doing together.

New friends are made, new characters are introduced, and more of the supernatural world that Gideon is from is revealed. This book does not end with a happily ever after ending for the two men, but there's still time in Book 3!

This story takes off after Taking His Confession. You’ll want to read that first or you’ll be a little lost. Gideon and Cordero are continuing their fight against Dane Stephens who is truly evil! Cordero is staying with Gideon in his lair. Gideon and Cordero disagree about how to handle things and it causes discord in their relationship. I hated Father Joe, he was more concerned with repairs to the church, he let the evil in! Overall I loved the story and cannot wait for the next. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy I received. This was solely based on my honest thoughts and views.

I received a copy for an honest review.

Deacon Cordero Cruz is now on the run from drug lord Dane Stevens after blowing up one Stevens' meth labs at the end of the first book. Cordero and Gideon are trying to clean up the streets but it's getting harder and harder for Cordero to justify their actions. Weather is getting colder and Cordero feels he's a hindrance to Gideon. He wants to feel needed again. He returns to the church in secret, helped by Father Joe to work in the soup kitchen. Meanwhile, Gideon really befriends Ted, the clerk from the gas station, confiding in him and training with him.

Cordero tries to help a young girl he found stealing food from the pantry. She's the sister of one of Stevens' pushers. Also Cordero feels like he's being watched. There's a new nun working at the soup kitchen, Sister Jeanne. She seems a little sinister.

The neighborhood has gotten rougher since Gideon started trying to clean things up. A series of killings are popping up around town.

We finally get a glimpse of Gideon's past and why he believes he was cursed. I really liked Ted. His constantly calling Gideon Goliath is hilarious. And seriously Cordero and Gideon really need to up their communication. Keeping secrets and telling half truths is unhealthy in a relationship.

Can't wait to read what happens next.

The first book in this series was very much up my alley, but this one is even better. We see more of Cleveland in the grip of Stevens' drug dealing and our characters find that their battle is not without cost both to themselves and to innocent bystanders. Our two main characters have to decide what price they are willing to pay to achieve their goal and this leads to some real soul searching and a very angsty read. If you want a series with real character development and discussion of real moral dilemmas, this is one for you. Cannot wait for book 3!

In this installment, the adventures of Cordero, tormented but valiant deacon and Gideon, sarcastic and weirdly sexy gargoyle, continue. The fight against the drug dealers who devastated Cordero's childhood and continue to threaten his church and his community is ongoing, and Cordero and Gideon don't always see eye to eye on the best way to handle them. Add to that that Cordero wants more from Gideon than just nights, which Gideon's curse emphatically doesn't allow, and you have all the ingredients for the same heady blend of sarcasm, angst, love, and moral quandary that made the first book in this series so good. I love both of these characters, although Gideon just a little bit more (I'm team gargoyle, what can I say) so I raced through this book and was excited to see the promise of everything-- the curse, the drug war, and the relationship coming to a head in book 3.

This is the second book in a series that has to be read in order, this book is not a stand line and is a good continuation from the first.
This book is full of action and danger, the excitement starts on the very first page and doesn’t let up till the last. Communication or a generational block becomes more evident when Gideon and Cordero disagree on the cost of humanity, causing this to be a cliffhanger ending in preparation for the next book.
I did like this it was engaging and exciting and I look forward to what comes in book 3.

In book two Gideon & Cordero’s relationship is really put to the test and they end up on opposite side of things! Things got really bad but love always prevails and they were able to make things right between each other! Unfortunately, things are about to get tough for them & their friends! Taking down Dane is very important to all of them! I’m not a fan of cliffhanger but so far this trilogy was well worth the read!😀

I received the ARC through Gay Romance Reviews. After the first book I was hoping Cordero the deacon would be more courageous in the continuation of the series. However, I still felt Gideon was putting a lot more into the relationship. Don't get me wrong... they are both terrible at communicating with each other, but Gideon tries harder to make Cordero happy. Cordero gets jealous when Gideon makes a friend in this book. It just seems so childish a reaction. There is a plot twist and soft cliffhanger, so I'll be finishing up the third book just for the resolution.

A continuation from book 1 and this needs to be read before starting this one. Jam packed full of action, excitement and major communication issues between Cordero and Gideon that nearly cause a fatal mistake. Ends on a cliffhanger but it is so intriguing and fills you with excitement for what happens next. Roll on book 3.

After reading book one I looked forward to this story. This is a continuous cliffhanger series and needs to be read in order. That being said; Drug lords, gargoyles, and a love story oh my. What’s next? Grab this now and take the journey.

So this is not a stand-a-lone, you really need to have read the first book in the series. So in this book we see the more human side of Gideon and boy does he have a sense of humor. So our boys are still trying to stop Dane Stevens, our drug lord who is running the streets with an iron fist. Cordero is staying at Gideon's lair but it doesn't have any amenities. There are times I wanted to smack the crap out of Father Joe because he was all about how Stevens is helping with repairs to the church is a member of the church & just turns a blind eye to the evils that he does. Then when Cordero agrees to go back to the church, Gideon kind of turns against him. These two had a lot to deal with in this book. I loved Gideon's friend Ted, but he doesn't come clean with Cordero & kind of turns his back on him. We also find out that there is another "being" and that turns really scary to find out how he gets that way. Oh let me say, I love Sister Jeanne, she is a bada&&.

Gargoyles and romance

This was a super interesting gargoyle romance. I enjoy storylines about gargoyles there’s so few of them. This storyline was action filled and exciting. The characters Cordero and Gideon are interesting and intriguing. This was a great start to the series can’t wait for the next book am hoping they get there HEA.

I loved the continuation of the plot in this book, and I am eagerly awaiting the third book. I loved seeing Gideon and Cordero's love be as strong as it was. I really like the mission that they are on. There is a point in the book where the two get so inside their head and become so repetitive that you might have to put it down for a little and come back to it, I didn't but I get that others did. I want to see more Ted and Jeanne in the third book, so fingers crossed. Do not read this book if you have not read the first book in the series or it will not make sense, but if you have read t he first one I would recommend that you read this one.

Loved reading the continuing story arc from the first book. Both Gideon and Cordero are still struggling with the evil going on in their city while trying to figure out their relationship and all the guilt still from their past. Secrets are slowly being revealed and Cordero now hopes that Gideon’s gargoyle status can be reversed. Loving Sister Jeanne and all the mystery surrounding her!! No conclusion yet...looking forward to the next story!!

Exciting and emotional

So much happened in this book and they’ve got me hook, line, and sinker. Cordero is so utterly normal in his feelings and reactions, and I mean that in the best way. He’s emotionally flawed, just like all of us, and didn’t magically turn in to a bada** to save the day - and that is so refreshing! I can suspend reality all day long for a book, but it’s always a treat when the characters are so relatable.

This second book had a lot of exciting twists and turns, all the feels between Cordero and Gideon, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out in the third book. You definitely need to read book one, but believe me, that is no hardship.

Don’t read this if you haven’t read book 1 Taking His Confession. Gideon and Cordero are continuing their fight against Stephens who continues to prove that he really is power hungry and evil. This is a deep book. These two characters are flawed and are trying to figure out how to make their relationship work while also trying to stop the drug lord. These guys don’t get their HEA just yet but I am interested to see how these events play out in book 3. I did read an ARC of this book.

This second book in the Cloth and Stone series finds Cordero and Gideon struggling to fight the forces of evil in Cleveland—more specifically, the drug lord Dane Stevens. Both Cordero and Gideon know the man brings misery to the city, but their efforts to stop him seem to hurt more than they help. Things come to a head when people start to get hurt and an actual monster is let loose on the city. Gideon and Cordero can’t see eye to eye on how to solve the problem and their relationship starts to suffer. Neither man understands that there is more to what is going on than they know about. When innocent people die, Gideon and Cordero each blame themselves and Cordero compromises his very soul to save the people of Cleveland. Gideon vows to move heaven and earth to save the man he loves.

I enjoyed this book, although I’ll admit that I had a hard time getting into it at first because the two MCs seemed to suffer from the rom com trope of misunderstandings driven by not actually talking to each other. That being said, the second half of the book pulled me in as a whole bunch of new surprises were revealed. The ending definitely left me wanting more and I eagerly await the final book in the series.

Continuation of book 1

Gideon and Cordero start book 2 by trying to take out drug dealers of Dane's.

Hiding out in Gideon's lair,
Gideon seems to forget that Cordero has limitations on what his human body can withstand. Winter is brutal.

Soon Cordero sees that maybe the way they are fighting the drug boss is all wrong. That they are hurting innocent people by trying to take out Dane the way they are.

Gideon is angry. He feels used by Cordero. He stays away from him and spends more time with Ted from the gas station.

Cordero volunteers at the soup kitchen and is able to stay warm at the rectory. Jeanne is a visiting nun and is helping out since Cordero took off. She is not what she seems.

Soon there are reasons to suspect there is something supernatural going on in the neighborhood.

I liked this one. Of course the first one I loved more because the characters were longing for each other and it just seemed so hopeless. Now they are arguing a bit and Gideon is kind of a hot head. He doesn't listen at times. Its frustrating. Anyhow, love the series. Can't wait till we find everything out in next book!

Serving His Penance is the second book in the Cloth and Stone Trilogy by authors PJ Friel and Saffron Hart. This is not a standalone title. This story picks up where book one left off. This story is told in dual POV.

Out of the two books, I have read thus far this one is not my favorite. I did like how there is more world-building that is good. Just the rest of it was not my cuppa tea.

Too much angsty almost whining from our resident gargoyle. I just felt he was in his own way in this book.

Gideon has to grow a ton in this story. He also needs to realize that not everything is about him. He came off as self-centered to me for not taking Cordero’s feelings into consideration.

I do hope the next story in this series makes these two come together in a way I can get behind. This story is happy for now ending, and I do want to see what happens next.

We pick up from book one. Gideon and Cordero are still having their share of struggles. Changes of heart are on he horizon and may become a test to their relationship and their crusade. Strength, and trust are important for their overall success. The loss of a human life cost them. Allowing doubt to creep in.
Without essential communication between Gideon and Cordero, the issues will continue to mount. Gideon must show a lot of growth to keep going.

Can they step up enough to continue the fight against the evil Dane?

*************************************************
Book 2 ends on a cliffhanger. Off to delve into book 3.
Reader reminder: To gain the best effect of this series, please begin with book one. Not a standalone series and should be read in order.

This was just as good as the first one!

Gideon and Cordero are back with much more challenges to face this time. This is continuing on the plot of the first book with some more twists and turns in it. Gideon and Cordero both had some growth as well as some challenges and I really enjoyed getting to see them together. They were very hot! The plot is interesting and so were the characters which made this all together a solid read!

Theres going to be one more book in this series and im so anxious to see what happens in the finale!! 4 stars

Though I did enjoy this story I found it had a lot of inner turmoil and doubt between both men that at times I just wanted to skip it, but didn’t as I didn’t want to miss anything. Gideons story is told in this one and it’s sad. Made my heart hurt for him.

I liked the friendship between Ted and Gideon and hope to see more of it in the next book. I wasn’t surprised how things turned out with sister Jeanne. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of her in the next story. I was surprised though about Nolan and hope things are explained more.

This is book 2 in the series and is part of a continuing series, best enjoyed in the series order. They are not standalones.

Here Gideon and Cordero relationship is put to the test.

This was an action packed paranormal romance.
I absolutely adore the world building of this series.

After the Cliffhanger in book 1, I knew I had to dive into book 2 and 3 to see what happens next.

This book starts off right after where book 1 ended. So be sure to read that before heading into this one
