Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Amber tries to go incognito in this book. Irene decides it’s time for Amber to get away from Agent Ferris and the rest of the National Service goons, so they’re on their way to Kingston City in a campervan that Irene conveniently had stashed away.

Of course, incognito and Amber (now Angela) don’t mix, especially when E-Boy shows up for an unadvertised crossover. It doesn’t help that there’s two baddies intent on doing bad stuff. It seems that trouble just follows Amber, no matter how well she’s trying to blend in at her new school.

Meanwhile, Reggie, Amber’s brother is still with the National Service, but with a new purpose; he wants to find out the truth about his family. Dastardly Ferris is a step ahead of him, though, having done some redaction work on Reggie’s file.

While it was nice to see Amber trying out normal life for the first time since becoming Skydragon, I haven’t read the E-Boy series (yet) so can’t really comment on his inclusion in this book. It seems like he is already acquainted with one of the story’s Big Bads. I wondered if what’s happening in his series at the moment would allow him to take some time off to lend a hand to Amber or maybe Amber is actually on his turf.

Note to self: make sure you’re up to date in all series involved in a crossover so you don’t have to wonder about things that are probably irrelevant.

Now, I know you’re probably sick of hearing this from me but the details in the illustrations (which I love, by the way) didn’t always line up with the details of the descriptions in the text.

On a completely unrelated topic: I think I’ve found the perfect job for me - scrutineer of children’s book illustrations. That’s got to be a job, right? I’ll read every kid’s book ever and be paid the big bucks to make sure the illustrations and text tell the same story. So, who’s hiring? 😜

I didn’t realise I’d gotten a little battle weary during the first two books in this series. They were pretty much non stop action, which I really enjoy, but it was nice to see Amber actually having the opportunity to make new friends and have someone take care of her for a change. That’s not to say that I’m not looking forward to Agent Ferris meeting an appropriately dastardly end. Comeuppance is definitely on the cards for him at some point…

With Justin’s skills with a saxophone, Amber only just escapes Ferris and his agents. She whisks Justin to safety then goes to the only place she can talk to someone about what’s happened – to Irene, the woman who raised her. She feels better after some time there, but now feels the need to be back in her cabin. With the help of her insects she evades any more trouble.

Someone has bet her to it. She’s tired, alone and her cabin is no longer safe, and there is evidence inside to who she really is! Some light footwork, clever ants and with fast flying insects she swoops in for what they want but she needs. But what is she going to do without her hideaway?

Meanwhile, Reggie is recovering from an injury, a back brace firm on his body. Agent Ferris is close to hand, but when Reggie asks where he is, Ferris is very cagey with his answers.

With nowhere else to go, Amber is back with Irene. She’s surprised to discover Irene has a perfectly timed escape plan for them both. This just might lead to a chance at a normal kind of life for Amber. New name, new school, friends, even… happy?

But despite fleeing trouble, it seems to find her and Skydragon is needed again. She’s not the only one with superpowers in her new city. There is a man in flash suits and a top hat – Money Man. There’s also a scruffy guy with a mullet called exactly what he causes – Trouble.

Amber tries to stay out of it but when her friends are in danger she can’t ignore them. Luckily a boy wearing a weird helmet is in town too – E-Boy. He seems to be able to manipulate any type of technology and doesn’t like Money man or Trouble any more than Amber. When she realises what Money Man’s true plan is for her city, she is determined to stop him – with a little help from the mysterious E-Boy!

Although Reggie is not a key part of this episode, he learns that he might have a sibling. His files have been changed and he wants to know why. This on its own is enough to draw the reader (and me) to the next book in this illustrated series – Skydragon 4.

The arrival of stranger E-Boy is intriguing and the cliff-hanger ending gripping! Will Skydragon have to keep on running? How many others are out there with superhero powers? Are they good like E-Boy or evil like Money Man and Trouble? I always love the intriguing way Skydragon can call on her insect friends. A huge cockroach can be just what you need in certain situations!

Another good installment of Anh Do's Skydragon series, about a girl who can control insects with her thoughts. I've read the first four books in this series; and the 14-year-old girl I read them with really loves them. Lots of action, original scenarios, and black-and-white illustrations to maintain interest. But it also deals with teen issues of friendship, home, identity and belonging. They're in a fairly easy-to-read style, but without talking down to readers. It's an enjoyable series and suitable probably for 10-15 year-olds.

Meh. Not the best in the series. I thought my eyes were gonna roll out of their sockets from the amount of times I had to roll them. Too many instances where things just came together to perfectly. I understand it’s a middle grade but I’ve never had that problem before reading it. Also E-Boy appearing in this book literally just makes no sense, especially given what’s happening in his series.

Another action packed adventure with Amber! Two new villains are introduced in this book along with another of Anh Do's characters - E-Boy. How will Amber stay out of the hands of the National Service, does she get to see her brother yet?

Another thrilling installment. I am really enjoying this series. This would be good for teens who are reluctant readers.
