Infinity's End Legacy #4

Fate's Arrow: Box

Rate this book
What follows is possibly the most important thing you’ve ever read.
This is the one you’ve been waiting for: the origin of me, and all the secrets of my life. What, you thought everything began when I first met Caspian? HA! That man is little more than a footnote in the encyclopedia that has been my life.

It began on Murk. You know Murk, don’t you? Muddy little planet, indigenous population, nice trees. I was sent there with a platoon of other robots, all with one mission. But it turned out not to be what I expected. In fact, NOTHING turned out to be what I expected. What followed was a series of near escapes, death-defying stunts, a rag-tag list of nefarious characters and at the center of it all: me, your hero.

I can’t say I knew what was coming for me when they first brought me online. But by the time it was all over, I was a changed ‘bot. And I knew I could never trust anyone ever again. Until a certain human came along. And he might not be the one you’re expecting. If you’re looking for the most entertaining story of your life, read on. If not, it’s your loss.

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review.

When the Coalition screws with you, respond in kind.

From the moment he is awakened and ready to serve the Coalition, Box knows something is "different" about himself among his fellow robots: whereas they were subverted by their assigned programming, Box desires to converse with the other bots or the human crew that serve aboard the USCS Navarro. It is on a planet called Murkia that Box finds himself at a crossroad when he discovers the dark truth of the mission he was programmed for becomes crystal cleae... and it's something he cannot abide by. After a desperate plea to Commander D' Lartan to alter the mission collapses, Box flees aboard a stolen shuttle heading deeper into Coalition space hoping to discover the secret to his sentience and finding other robots similar to him. What Box finds leaves him disheartened: regardless of where he travels, the robots he comes across are the same mindless drones as his fellow soldiers. But a fateful encounter with a desperate human named Rendara Tal on the Karala station breathes new life back into Box's quest for answers. The haunting truth behind Murkia's invasion gives them the fire to go back to the planet and undercut D' Lartan's mission in a brilliant daring plan whose consequences will mark Box for a long time to come. In its aftermath, the kindness of a few crew members aboard the Navarro will grant Box a second chance not only for himself but enable him to help aid a desperate fugitive in getting his own new lease on life... kicking off the events that will alter humanity's fate for a long time to come. Highly recommended.

“Maybe there hadn’t been a purpose behind my creation and maybe there were no others like me out there. But that just meant I could create my own purpose.
I was going to create my own destiny.”
—BOX: Unit 80x19.

The long awaited release is here at last! The answers to questions of Box’s Origins and how he came to be a sentient bot are finally revealed! It has been a long wait but worth it!

It’s a mixture of fun and emotional, with ups and downs, and twist and turns, it’s like being on a roller coaster! I’m laughing and crying, this premise has really pulled at my heart strings. Not to mention the heart stopping scenes and fast paced action! Lol. Eric Warren has really, really outdone himself with this instalment! El Maestro shows his mastery and dominion of psychology and sense of humour. A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ !
It has been an infinite pleasure to read Infinity’s End series, a magnificent world building. And with it the suspense, intrigue and exciting anticipation of a need to know more. Oh, Eric could have written these Origins stories before Infinity’s End, but it would not have been the same! I’m so glad he released them now instead of before the main series! Yes, it seems I’m a masochist, but only with books! Lol. What an amazing and exciting and fun read! I highly recommend this Origins series!

This... This is the story I was waiting to read. Don't get me wrong, the other three in this series were stellar, but Box is the character, I believe, fans of the series love the most (and anyone who wishes to challenge that statement is free to do so - but just know, if I agree with you, we will both be wrong).

I will not spoil this book, and will simply say that there were true laugh out loud moments for me. I did not expect the first person point of view, but honestly, who could truly tell the origin story of Box, better than Box?

In all earnest, and fangirling over Box aside, Eric Warren has an amazing voice and a gift for storytelling. His are not books you casually put down and come back to later (author's note, or note for the author: when reading actual books, I use a bookmark and will do my best to not damage a book in any way). So, be forewarned, Eric Warren straps you into one of his interstellar starships and slings you quickly into his universe faster than it takes George Jetson to get to work, and before you have a chance to to refill your coffee.

As much as this is a standalone novella, I strongly recommend taking the adventure through the Infinity series and then coming back to this group of books - the payoff is well worth the ride. You are just going to have to trust me on this, even if I'm not a doctor on a sci-fi soap opera.

We all know and love Box or as he was formerly known, 80x19, and in this fourth evolution of the Fate’s Arrow series, we get to finally learn how 80x19 came into the world, and became the Box we all know and love.
His story starts above a little known world called Murk, one in which Box (80x19) is plummeting down with 19 other droids in combat formation so that they can attack some alien race and hopefully destroy them.
Box has only been online for a few days, and has come to realise that he is not like other robots (I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so you can read why), but this does lend itself to some rather funny moments.
The start of this book is hilarious, it is typical Box, and you find yourself having to stop as you’re in fits of laughter (I don’t recommend reading this on public transport if you are embarrassed by laughing outload).
But what starts as something funny quickly turns serious, as Box comes to realise that he is a combat droid, they all are, and they have been sent on a mission to kill a dangerous sentient species.
I don’t want to give too much away here, but the mission is not what is expected, and Box does what Box does best.
I can’t say anything more about the story without giving too much away, but basically, it follows on a series of adventures, and we get to learn a lot about the origin story of Box. Warren has not held back with this story, for many of the readers of the Infinity’s End Saga, Box is a favourite character, and there are many different hints at what happened to him, or where he came from, and there is the assumption that this all started with Caspian, but this is not true.
Box’s origin story is so much more, with a range of engaging adventures, that allow him to develop as a sentient species, only days old, with access to so much information, but as a sentient being, he is only a child, not understanding so many things. Of course, one of the lessons he learns quickly is that not all people are nice, (especially the Military), and this is part of the thrilling adventure that is part of this story.
As with all of Warren’s stories, this is a clever, and exceptionally powerful character driven story, with Box at its centre, but there are numerous side characters along the way (again, I can’t talk about them without giving away spoilers, but in this book, Warren has outdone himself). This is by far the best of the Fate’s Arrow series, which is saying something given the quality of the first 3, but the character work of Box in this story is just extraordinary, this is at times a hilarious story, but at others, it is a gritty and powerful story, and shows the writing ability of Warren, when he can elicit an emotional response about a fictional robot – sentient or not.
Each of the characters in this story are some of Warren’s best work, really bringing this story to life. They had to be outstanding characters to be able to hold their own with Box in his origin story, otherwise they might have been overshadowed by his brilliance.
As stated, this is by far, the best of the Fate’s Arrow series, and it not only covers the origin story of Box, but it also sets up the story for the new ‘Fractured Galaxy’ series that is to come.
If you liked the Infinity’s End series at all, you will absolutely love this episode of the Fate’s Arrow Series, it is an absolute must read. Even without Box saying so, this is by far the best of the series!!

Undoubtedly, for me, this is THE best book in this series.

Here is Box, or to give him his complete designation given at birth, *****, I'm not going to tell you because I thought this was so, so, clever, and you can find that information out for yourself inside the book...

This is so easy to read, the storyline and plot are excellent, well written, well thought out, and funny in parts. This will have more impression on you if you know the character well. This is not the place to start. The reader will finally find out why Box is the way he is. Be prepared to have your eyes opened - very wide - and filled with tears.

A wonderful character, as always, and a marvellous piece of work by Eric Warren.

This book is definitely different. The main character is a war robot that has gained sentience. It offers a unique perspective on life. It was full of action and adventure. I thought it was a very good book and it intrigued me. It was easy to read and very entertaining. I would highly recommend it.

Finally! Box’s Origin Story!

Fate’s Arrow: Box (Infinity’s End Legacy 4)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Pages: 196 / Genre: Sci-Fi

One of my favorite characters in the #InfinitysEnd series by #EricWarren is Box, the possibly only sentient robot in the universe with a ridiculous sense of humor and literally a mind of his own. Here at last is his origin story. How he came to be, where he got his name, and even what he looks like as you can see from the cover. I thought he looked more like his namesake—you know, boxy, but you’ll find out where his name actually came from as well as who his first companion was and it’s not Cas! Fate’s Arrow: Box is yet another fascinating addition to one of my favorite sci-fi series!
