This book was inspired by a request from a colleague. He suggested I write an evidence-based book for the millions of people across the globe who have needle fears and phobias. The sad reality is there are simply not enough trained mental health professionals to offer individualized treatment for those fearful of getting vaccinated, visiting their dentist, or having blood withdrawn.
Conquer Needle Phobia was written to offer you practical tools that you can use whenever you face getting your next shot, receiving a needle injection, or having your blood drawn. Use this book as a reference and resource companion to gain greater knowledge, reduced anxiety, and increased confidence. Facing your fears is never easy, but the hope is that after reading this book you will at very least find the prospect of getting injections of any kind more tolerable.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Conquer Needle Phobia is a self help book to help you understand your fears of needle Phobia and recognise if you have a needle Phobia or fear. The book is broken down into bitesize sections and each one gives information, suggestions and references throughout the book. This is a book I will read again when I am due fir a blood test as I always go squeamish and faint so I'm hoping this will help me next time with refreshers of information and ideas.
The book is mainly what the title suggests. I liked the approach of the author. The structure by chapters is very easy and the author uses some common terms to explain the basics of how to reach a better version of oneself when exposed to needle phobia. For sure each of the topics he discusses can be richly studied and researched. However, the book was a nice read for me and I can recommend it to some of my patients. I enjoyed that we have at the end of each chapter some references. It is a nice start if you want to change the way you act and the bad habits or bad thoughts you have about yourself or about life and those surrounding you when exposed to needle phobia. It is useful for the therapists that just start their work with patients since it can help them a lot for the part of psychoeducation that they present during the therapy. The techniques presented are encountered a lot in CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) and are used not only in needle phobias. Many of these are given as tasks or homework after the therapy session and for sure it can help the patients.
This book had a lot of helpful information to manage anxiety when it comes to the fear of needles, some of which I will be putting into practice to calm my own anxieties. However, the book was written during the Covid-19 pandemic and is predominately geared towards overcoming fear and anxiety in order to get vaccinated. Therefore, all the example scenarios showing how the tips actually work in removing anxiety are related to getting vaccinated.
