I was granted complimentary access to SuperScruff as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

SuperScruff is a mini chapter book all about a little goat named Scruff and what he gets up to after returning home to the farm from his latest adventure. At first he's worried that his friends will be scared of him and worry about his experiences while away, but when they're curious and excited to hear what he did he realizes he's actually pretty special in there eyes. Super, in fact! But his newfound "super" identity goes to his head and he has to learn to balance his new confidence and self-imposed protector roll with also being a kind, responsible member of the farm family.

This book is bookended at the beginning and end with biblical quotes and sections of text that outline important factors in the moral themes of the storytelling are bolded (but not until page 14, so the sudden start of bold text felt weird) so this is clearly meant to be a Sunday school metaphorical lesson in morality and community membership for a young audience. I must admit I wasn't expecting walls of text in chapter form from a square format picture book with less than 50 pages and I'm wondering if parents and teachers browsing online stores for books for their kids and classrooms might misidentify the target age group of this book.

With that said, this is a very cute and entertaining story once you adjust your expectations (present it to the correct audience) and I think it will be very well received in its niche. It's an interesting format, and I think we actually need to see more books like this that give kids a transitional chapter book experience. This looks like the square picture books kids are used to entering the grade 1-2 reading range but gives them the length and complexity of books they'll be expected to read in grade 2-3.

This illustration work is cute if a little simplistic. It's one of those styles where the adults reading along will wonder if stylistic choices were made or if the artist was asked to draw subject matter they're not familiar with, but kids will just see cute animals and be quite happy with it.

In an age where we are inundated with superheroes, it's kind of nice to have a story that talks about what a superhero actually is. Now, don't get me wrong, I do love me some Marvel. But you have to look beyond the superhuman feats that these characters perform and into who they are within, what kinds of morals they value. And this story seeks to teach children to look within to be a super person that way.

This is the second story in the series and it sounds like our little friend had quite the adventure in the first one. We don't get too much detail about what happened in that first story, but it isn't necessary to enjoy reading this one. Though you may want to go back and read the first one after this one.

It does have a biblical focus that ties into its lessons. So this would be good to discuss with a small church group or even at home with your elementary-aged children. The cover does make it look like it's more of a picture book geared toward younger children, but it is a sort of mini chapter book.

Scruff learns his lesson as he tries (and fails) to perform superhuman [supergoat?] feats to impress the other animals on the farm. Kids will get a kick out of reading those.

The only part I didn't care for was when he ran away in fear from his mother, who was upset with him, "rolling pin in hand." That's not something that most people would use for discipline these days. But of course, she doesn't use it on him.

Otherwise, I think kids will enjoy this story and learn a lot from it.

Thank you to Goddess Fish and the publisher for providing me with a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“SuperScruff” by P Lynn Halliday is part of the ‘Goat Tails’ series, and features some of the barnyard animals on a family farm in Canada, particularly an exuberant kid goat named Scruffy. His decision to live up to the name SuperScruff leads him into multiple adventures and require that he learn the purpose the Maker has decreed for his life.

This Christian children’s fantasy teaches several lessons utilizing cute animal characters. In addition to the identical bible scriptures that bookend the story, Scruff’s mother counsels him about serving the Lord’s purpose rather than puffing up his own importance. There are a few consequences that are glossed over, and at times I was a bit confused about whether the characters referred to were human or animal, but I enjoyed the interactions between Scruff and his friends and family. The illustrations do a great job of enhancing the story, and I think this is a lovely teaching story for youngsters.

SuperScruff Goat Tails is a book that teaches a lesson that all children need to learn. This Christian children’s book is a chapter book that tells children some goat tales about a goat named Scruffy. Scruffy is a young goat who is full of himself and wants to be a super hero. He tends to get in trouble and one day he gets lost. When he survives and comes back to the barnyard, the other animals are all so happy that he made it back. He responds with more arrogance and decides that he needs to show off with some super skills.

When he totally fails at all the super hero skills, he becomes upset and feels dejected. His mother speaks to him and tries to convince him that being super is not about showing out, but being a servant to others. But, will Scruffy learn his lesson?

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

This book was such a fun, exciting, amusing, and entertaining children's book!!!

This book is also filled with strong, inspiring, motivating, and encouraging passages that appropriately fit, stimulate, and appeal to young readers.

This book also contains Christian religious themes with actual verses incorporated into the story.

Meet Scruffy, a goat with an admiration for superheroes. What made them so super? Well, the superpowers, of course! One day, he decided to show the other barnyard animals that he could be super, too, by showing off his super skills. Can he Super-Hop? Super-Speed? Super-Fly? We watch as he tries and stumbles in such cute and colorful illustrations. Funny and enjoyable. See all the harebrained ideas he comes up with and see how he goes from Scruffy to Super Scruff.

“Never doubt that the Maker has made you special.”

A super barnyard tale with an inspirational message to be a Super You.

Such a fun book for kids. Fun and a good educational tool too. The "goat tails" are fun. The illustrations are too. I think Lynn Halliday should practice her super skills and keep writing more goat tails.
