ESCAPE FROM THE 73RD FLOOR: A MEMOIR OF SURVIVING THE 9/11 TERRORIST ATTACK

Rate this book
From the moment a hijacked airplane crashes into his building, Bruce Walch’s harrowing escape from the 73rd floor of 1 WTC begins. When close to being able to exit, the South Tower collapses and he is forced back up to the 10th Floor. When trapped on the 10th floor, a small group of firefighters appear and show the small group he is with a safe path down a stairwell. Tragically, he would later learn that not all of the firefighters and police that saved his life made it out that day and that he was among the last to escape the North Tower before it collapsed. Escape from the 73rd A Memoir of Surviving the 9/11 Terrorist Attack is the first time this true story is being published.

3.5 stars, which I will round up to 4 stars

To start, I do agree with someone else who said that this book is 1.) a very quick read and, 2.) that is reads more like an essay. I am aware that this book is self-published by the writer and his wife. I am also aware that it is Bruce's first hand account of what happened on 9/11 to one person who was in one of the towers when this happened.

The story itself is good. I have read a few 9/11 memoirs but they have been from the partners of people who have lost their lives in the attack. This is the first story I have read (or found) of someone who was in the towers when the first plane hit, and their personal account of how they got out of the tower and to safety. I think that alone is very powerful considering what a moment in our history that attack was.

That being said, this book is about 100 pages total and only describes the events of that day so, be aware of that if you are going to pick it up. I am giving 3.5 stars because it is so short, it is kind of repetitive, and could have used an editor but 4 stars overall because of the story given here.

To be honest, this is more of an essay than a book; you can finish it in a couple of hours or less.

However, I'm addicted to these survivor accounts, so for me, they're worth reading, and they're all certainly worth being documented in some form.

This is an account from Bruce K. Walch, a civil engineer who worked for the Port Authority at the North Tower. He came pretty close to losing his life: at 1015 he was trapped on the 10th floor and only just made it out before the collapse at 1028.

I'm giving this 3 stars rather than, say, 4, because it seemed like the author was holding back on details he may have thought a bit too gruesome to include. I say the realities should be documented.

A brave story of survival

It doesn't matter how many books or documentaries you see about 9/11 it never ceases to stay with me the courage, bravery and compassion of so many people that day, emergency personnel, first responders and ordinary people just at work. This story it's another story of courage and hope and I really enjoyed it
