Published in the late ‘80s this book provides a very accessible and beautifully illustrated account of the history and architecture of Cambridge and of the famous people associated with the University throughout the ages. I bought the book shortly after its publication when I was in Cambridge for a Clare College reunion dinner, but it has taken me until now (almost 30 years later) to read it from cover to cover. I am amazed at myself that for all my interest in history and my awareness when I was at Clare of the antiquity and beauty of my surroundings, I never thought to inform myself of their history at the time. But it’s never too late to take up an interest. This book, apart from an informative but rather dull final chapter on the (then) recent growth of technology industries in the area, has renewed my dream of one day revisiting the city of so many of my happy and formative memories.
