Praise for Praying Through
“What an encouraging devotional! Written by women who have walked the road and speak from experience, it demonstrates how God can enable you to come through the trials of cancer with praise on your lips, peace in your spirit, and hope in your heart.”—Kay Marshall Strom, author of The Cancer Survival Guide
“Journeying through breast cancer, the most authentic voices that encouraged me were women who have pilgrimmed ahead of me. . . . This book nourished my spirit and renewed my hope—may it do the same for you.”—Karen Hill, Author of Owen’s Walk and assistant to Max Lucado
A dear friend gave me this book to read. Although I don’t have cancer, my husband does and this little book is a treasure of Biblical wisdom to get through it on a daily basis.
I LOVED this book. It may have a lot to do with my wife being diagnosed with colon cancer and two weeks ago having surgery, now we meet our oncologist next week ... but in that journey God has given us peace and assuredness that He is in control. Still, we are human and emotions come and go and we may have that peace tested. I have already purchased a copy of this book and gifted it to my wife so she can be encouraged during upcoming treatment. Reading this myself, helped me to more closely tune in to some of the thoughts and feelings she has or will experience - but many of them I too had already experienced, so it was like sitting down with a friend, or many friends who have faced cancer in the face and survived. You'll have a few moments to laugh, whether reading about Pink Panther movies, or chemo crotch pantyhose (to go under the wig)... or the encouragement that the Big C (Christ) has already beaten the Little c (cancer), or that when arms are spread during chemo sessions it can be a reminder of what Jesus did for us on the cross. For the women telling their stories in this book, cancer was not a comma but a period in the sentences of their lives and that was because of their faith in Jesus who lives in their hearts. The final word is an encouragement to invite him in for those who haven't - making this book a great gift for any friend who may be facing this battle whether they already are a believer or not. An advance copy of this book was made available through NetGalley with no commitment for a positive review.
Full Disclosure: I have not been diagnosed with cancer, but I have had many family members and friends that have been diagnosed with cancer as well as many loved ones that have lost the battle. It is with this lens that I write this review.
I found Praying Through Cancer: A 90-Day Devotional for Women by Susan Sorensen and Laura Geist to be very encouraging. Each devotion is written by a cancer survivor and includes a Scripture, a thought by that particular author, a prayer, a tip for that day, and supplemental Bible verses. Each devotion gave first hand knowledge and experience from that particular author’s point of view on their cancer journey, encouraging the reader they are not alone.
I loved the personal stories of the authors and reading what they have learn through their journey. I appreciated how some of the devotion entries referenced the author’s family and friends and how they perceived and dealt with their loved one’s cancer. The tips at the end of each devotion gave me ideas on how I could bless and be there for those that have cancer. I recommend this book and believe that it would be an encouragement to those that have cancer and their love ones.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is Goodreads and my blog, Leslie's Library Escape.
From the first devotional, I knew I was holding something very special in my hands. This 90-day devotional for women dealing with cancer (their own or that of a loved one) is written by women who have been in their shoes. It is raw, honest, personal, uplifting, and inspirational.
I absolutely love this book and will return to the wisdom within it time and time again. I recommend it highly to anyone trying to get through a dark and difficult time.
My thanks to Thomas Nelson publishers for allowing me to read a copy of this book via NetGalley. All opinions expressed within this review are my own and are freely given.
A friend, who is a breast cancer survivor, recommended this book to me. As I journey through my own course of treatment for stage four breast cancer, I found the stories and prayers of others who have traveled this road to be uplifting. Some days resonated more than others, but I found encouragement each day. Even though I have finished the book, I plan to read it again.
I highly recommend this to any woman who is going through cancer - no matter what type or what stage of her journey. Within its pages are comfort, joy, wisdom, and yes, even tears. But through it all are stories of God's grace and His hand upon the lives of all those who contributed.
Inspirational personal stories from cancer patients who all had great faith and a relationship with Jesus. They shared some beautiful heartfelt prayers and wisdom.
