I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Review:
As a contributor to issue #3 of Hexagon, it was nice to get a better idea of what JW Stebner is looking to publish. Hexagon, in its current stage of life, is a short read, with this particular issue being only 35 pages total. In fact, I read the entirety of issue #6 over a single cup of coffee. But what Stebner and his authors are able to accomplish within just a few pages is incredible, and by no means did I ever feel as though the content was hastily slapped together. Reading online can sometimes be a chore for me, but I found myself having no problems working my way through the PDF. The font is well sized and readable, and the cover does a good job in preparing me for what lay within the pages.
The Letter From the Editor is a nice touch, and I hope Stebner continues to do this in future issues. I enjoyed reading his spoiler free take on the stories he loves, and I enjoyed reading more about his editing process.
"Thorns" by Vera Hadzic was my favorite story in this issue. The opening couple of lines sunk their teeth into me right away, immediately creating a tension that does not let go until the end. Vera does a wonderful job in conveying emotion in this piece, and it's the sort of story that you should read more than once to get more out of it. I have always appreciated characters with no names. For some reason I always feel more connected to them.
While "Thorns" was my favorite, there truly isn't a bad story in this issue. While there were ones I connected with and ones I didn't, every single piece was well written, could be clearly understood, and had something interesting (if not powerful!) to say. I would highly recommend this issue to anyone looking for some short speculative fiction to read, and I will definitely be looking forward to issue #7.
I've never read the body horror genre before so I wasn't really sure what to expect. These stories are definitely not for the faint of heart but as always Hexagon only publishes the best.
Every story featured here is fantastically grotesque and well worth the read. But my favorite story for this issue was easily Your Body Is A Door Way by L Chan. A story about a tortured man who continuously fights to save Singapore. It's very reminiscent of giant monster/ super hero anime, well if it was horror that is.
