The magical mermaid whirlpool is malfunctioning, but Naya and Marina are sucked in and transported to an underwater cave. Unable to return, they begin to explore and discover that they are in an underground river with many twists and turns. Their friends follow them in a rescue attempt, but they are all stuck there until they can figure out why the whirlpool is malfunctioning. One part of the underground river emerges in a sunlit jungle, and the merfriends have fun playing on the rocks. However, there is a dangerous predator lurking in the shadows of the jungle, and the mermaids will have to protect their vulnerable pets.

I loved this cute book! The mermaid culture is wonderfully imaginative, and I thought it was so fun to learn about all the mermaid friends. We also get some real life facts about interesting fish and conservation in the ocean. The plot and mysterious adventure had me guessing and wondering!

I love all the interesting mermaid characters. They all have their own strengths and that is what makes them such a great team. Coralie is funny and smart and strong. Naya is always inventing some type of new scientific magical combination to help them in their adventures. Luna has a special connection to marine animals. Kai is always looking for a new way to do things, a new approach to their problems. And Marina is the heart of the group, and she is always encouraging and supporting the others.

The black and white illustrations in this book are so cool! It really brings the story to life. I love the art style, and the unique designs for each mermaid character.

The mermaids in this chapter book series love to have lots of adventures and take risks. Fortunately for them, everything tends to work out and they escape unscathed from whatever is threatening them.
In this, the fifth title in the series, Marina, Naya, Kai, and Coralie want to get to the bottom of what's wrong with the magic whirlpool. With their sea creature friends, they follow it to an underground river, several caves, and a jungle. They've never seen anything quite like this jungle and marvel at all the animals that inhabit the area. To their surprise, they are also joined by Glenda with whom they haven't always seen eye to eye. Although she is slightly injured and complains a little bit more than is necessary, the youngsters start to appreciate her more and think that they can trust her. During their escapade, Glenda bonds with Bubbles, a small dolphin whom Luna's mother is training. While the friends are on their adventure, the whirlpool stops moving, leaving them with no way to return home. It will take the efforts of all of them and some creative thinking to solve their problem and get them back with their families. While I don't like this series as much as Star Friends by the same author, it will certainly appeal to its intended audience, many of whom will wish that they could join these mermaids. The illustrations show off their individual characteristics and the places they explore through the help of the whirlpool. There are facts about bats and cenotes or sinkholes in the back matter, enabling young readers to absorb a bit of information along with the fantasy.
