Home in Heaven: A children's book about death, mourning, and farewell

Rate this book

Nice story

This was a sweet story explaining death to a young child. The beginning was a bit confusing though. It didn't explain why they had to move when Grandma was dying. The moving storyline didn't quite seem to fit in with the rest of it about Grandma dying other than the analogy about new home in Heaven for Grandma is like her moving to a new home. It could also benefit from a more thorough edit as there are a few minor punctuation errors. The illustrations of the book are quite unique and I liked looking at the illustrations. Death is a difficult topic to discuss with kids. It's good to see more books out there about it.

This was another Jesus-is-my-comfort-in-hard-times book about grieving, and that obviously doesn't work for me, but it does work for other people, so. Let me also say that the non-God parts of the book - the kid not understanding anything that was happening, the parents using metaphors and overly disguised language that she couldn't figure out, the idea of death ushering in other major life changes (like moving, and seeing your parents grieving) - were excellent. It's just that I cannot find the comfort in a this book the way it is intended to be comforting, so 2 stars.
