"Who Killed the President" is an excellent example of my favorite fiction. I generally prefer non-fiction but when I do dip into fiction I prefer historical fiction, a blend of facts and imagination.

Ever wonder what working in the White House is like? Christopher Emery's latest book describes the dedication the White House staff -- who typically spend decades in their White House roles -- have to making the lives of the presidential family as comfortable and productive as possible. Whether managing a state dinner with 100 guests or a single coffee service, Emery describes the dedication the staff has to their jobs.

Equally interesting, for me, were the many historical facts the author weaved into the story. "The usher's office was a small room just off the state floor. The room had been designated as the steward's lodge in the first-floor plans of 1792." is just one of many examples I found fascinating. Also, although I can't be sure, I'm guessing that the author, who spent eight years in the White House under Reagan, Bush I and Clinton, has woven his personal experiences with the Presidents and First Ladies into his story. If that’s the case, many First Ladies have found their White House Ushers to be their most loyal friends while in the White House.

All this is the framework that Emery uses to support a first-rate murder mystery in which the President suddenly and mysteriously dies. Initial indications are that he was murdered by a radicalized Islamist. I'll leave it at that. By the end of the book the reader has met a multitude of convincing characters from the NSA to the White House kitchen, drawn from the author's decades of government experience. The ending is a surprise, but sufficiently ambiguous leaving the reader wanting more -- and perhaps a sequel.

Highly recommended as a fascinating and fun read for both history and murder-mystery buffs.

The death of the president sets the stage, but it’s the emotional journey of Bartholomew Winston that truly drives this novel. There’s a haunting sense of loyalty and history woven into the plot, especially as he risks everything to uncover a truth no one wants exposed. It’s not always fast-paced, but the slower moments add depth and gravity. The writing is restrained but powerful, and the final reveal hits hard. A thoughtful political mystery that lingers after the last page.

Author Christopher Beauregard Emery published his first book, White House Usher: Stories from the Inside, in 2017, a memoir detailing his time managing the White House for Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Emery's new book, a mystery novel, takes place in one of the more unique settings in existence: the White House executive residence, home of the first family. Murder, romance, deceit, and a suspenseful struggle all ensue as the main character struggles to solve the case. Emery uses his in-depth knowledge of White House history and the inner workings of the private residence to create a thrilling murder mystery from an insider’s perspective.

Just an average novel

Enjoyed the details of the inner action in the White House involving the president and his or her family .
The novel story line was a little confusing and hard to follow.
