I really couldn't put this book down. The chapters are short and engaging. Brengle has a Spirit anointed way of communicating truth that is understandable, clear and winsome.

So many chapters had marvelous points. One was the chapter, "Go for Souls- and Remember Your Allies". He talked about how people everywhere have open hearts and really rarely will anyone snub your coming if you come in love. "Indeed, do they not expect you to speak to them? Let us not disappointment them. Let us deal with them boldly, kindly, tenderly, and faithfully, and Jesus will be with us and our hearts will surely burn with the sweetness of His presence and favor." Even in the early part of the 2oth century he tells the tendency of people drifting away from organized religion. "They much prefer shopping on Sundays or spending their evenings in the movie theaters." I had to look at the date this was written because it is very much the case today. But then he speaks of our five allies - the human heart (sinful and corrupt), human weakness, human conscience, other Christians, death and, finally, the Holy Spirit. All these work to make our message much anticipated.

In the chapter "Red-Hot Religion", he speaks of how we can alight our hearts "How can we get the fire? Not by feasting, but by fasting. Not by playing, but by praying. Not by sleeping and slothfulness, but by watching and by diligently seeking Good and the souls that wander from Him. Not by reading newspapers and devouring the comics and sporting news, but by searching the Scriptures." This is how we begin to get our hearts aflame with His presence.

He talks about the devil's whispers which can detract us in the chapter called "The Whisperer". We can defeat him by the clear truths in Revelation 12:10-11. First, by the blood of the Lamb. Second, by our testimony. And third, not loving our lives so much that we are not afraid to die." These three conditions will bring lasting blessing and the enemy will lose his hold on us.

He has a way of taking phrases from the Word that could be overlooked and uses them to open up powerful ideas. One of those comes in his chapter, "The Fleeing Prophet". Of course this is about Jonah, and anyone who wants to slide out from under God's lordship. When people run from the Lord circumstances will open up for them. In Jonah we read in chapter 1, verse 3, "He found a ship". There is always a ship waiting for those who want to flee. He spoke of many, both of the Bible and in our day who "found a ship" and ran away from God.

In the final chapter, "An Accident", he shares about a terrible car accident he suffered (as well as other hardships). He insists that God is able to bring good from all that happens to us, in fact he says that God does not make "pets of His people, and especially of those whom He woos and wings into close fellowship with Himself and fits and crowns for great and higher services...God has no interest in developing a race of mollycoddles...We need discipline, training, forethought, watchfulness, courage, self-restraint, steadfastness, patience, sympathy, faith, forbearance, a proper sense of our own limitations, dependence, and other virtues that unfold our personality and enrich and ennoble character."

This book is one of a series of six books in Samuel L. Brengle's Holy Life Series. I am really looking forward to reading them all.
