There is some good wisdom in this book, but a lot of its advice is either outdated for many churches today or too general to be of much use. Blackwood’s citations of many other books on the topic are helpful and provide the reader with additional works on worship, theology, and even psychology produced during Blackwood’s time.

Some of the language and approaches may be foreign to many ministers of today, but Blackwood’s treatment of public worship in Protestant (mainly Presbyterian) worship is admirable. It stresses the need for a minister to elevate the “fine art” of traditional worship.
