More than fifty years later, he mentioned in a letter to his son Michael that this trip had deeply affected him. Bilbo's journey in The Hobbit from Rivendell to the other side of the Misty Mountains, he said, was based on his own adventures in 1911. Tolkien himself named a few specific sources of inspiration, most explicitly the Silberhorn (Silverhorn). So I Was this perhaps only the tip of the iceberg? Diese Rezension beinhaltet meine persönliche Meinung.

„Ich möchte wieder Berge sehen, Gandalf – Berge!“ Der berühmte Satz von Bilbo gibt den Grundgedanken dieses Buches wunderschön wieder.
Die Schweiz ist voller Orte, die Tolkien zu seinen Werken inspiriert haben könnten und so findet man hier eine Sammlung aus Orten, Tolkiens Reiseroute und heimischen Legenden und Sagen, von denen einige verblüffend an den Herrn der Ringe und Hobbit erinnern.

Ich bin das Sachbuch mit großem Interesse und wenig Sachkenntnis angegangen, aus der Perspektive eines Tolkien-Fans, der mit der Schweiz normalerweise nichts zu tun hat. Und ich muss sagen, ich bin wirklich begeistert! Beim Lesen hatte ich das Gefühl, die Reise, die Tolkien 1911 unternahm, hautnah zu erleben. Das lag sicher auch an den vielen Karten und farbigen Bildern, die die Texte begleiten.
Der Autor vermischt Quellen, z.B. Tolkiens Briefe, Legenden, Geschichte und autobiographische Momente zu einem ganz und gar nicht langweiligen Reiseführer-Sachbuch.

Die Schönheit der Schweiz wird genauso herausgestellt wie das eigentliche Thema, Tolkiens Inspirationen. Das ganze Buch wirkt gut durchdacht, strukturiert und recherchiert. Wenn man genaueres nachlesen möchte, sind zahlreiche Quellen und Literaturlinks angegeben. Es ist nicht trocken, sondern locker und ab und zu witzig geschrieben. Die Recherche wirkt tiefgründig und dabei doch nicht zu ausholend. Man wird nicht von Hintergrundinfos erschlagen, die Mischung stimmt perfekt.

Was ich anzumerken habe sind die recht zahlreichen Rechtschreibfehler und ungewohnten Formulierungen (vielleicht teilweise auch dem Schweizer Dialekt geschuldet). Man merkt aber dem Autor auf jeden Fall seine Leidenschaft zu dem Thema an und wird wie Bilbo auf eine abenteuerliche Reise zu Gletschern, Höhlen und hohen Gipfeln im schweizerischen Alpenraum mitgenommen.
Die Wandervorschläge am Ende des Buches klingen interessant und erlebenswert. Und selbst wenn man keinen Urlaub dort machen kann, zumindest im Geiste macht man eine wundervolle Schweizreise.

Eine Empfehlung für Tolkien-Fans, die sich auch für die Hintergründe der Bücher und ihres Autors interessieren.

I'd recommend this for any lover of Tolkien traveling to Switzerland. You'll love having Middle Earth locations in your imagination as you travel through stunning scenery. This book is meticulously researched, and if you remember that inspiration doesn't mean copying and pasting but think of it like the cauldron Tolkien writes about where all the stories and legends and myths get mixed together in your mind and imagination, you'll appreciate this book.

So this is a book that takes Tolkien's journey through Switzerland in 1911 and finds sources of inspiration for LOTR and the Hobbit between his trip and the Swiss landscapes and legends. The author understand the limitations about what means to inspire something and how impossible the task actually is. However, the whole exercise is fun to do especially for someone living in Switzerland.

I found the book a bit longer than expected. But the hiking suggestions are very useful, especially for someone visiting Switzerland for the first time.

Sehr viel interessantes aber auch viel, dass ein bisschen sehr weitgeholt wurde. Tolkien hat auf seiner Reise sicher viel Inspiration geholt aber auch Mythen, Sagen und Inspirationen aus vielen anderen Ländern einfliessen lassen.

Io che amo sia Tolkien che la Svizzera l'ho trovato molto bello. La descrizione del viaggio del giovane scrittore è molto affascinante e sono belle anche le illustrazioni. Un po' forzato in alcune parti nel voler attribuire alla Svizzera ispirazioni che magari provengono da altri luoghi.

Interesting to see the views that possibly inspired Tolkien as places in Middle Earth during his walking tour of Switzerland. We know of some definite places and events that were inspired by the trip and the author points out and shows others that may possibly be eligible as inspiration.
