You must keep in mind the time this book was written, because it is deeply anti-feminist with all the “women’s greatest goal and only drive in life is to be a mother blah blah blah. It is the only pure joy women know- it’s all they want blah blah. ”. Will let it slide, Grantly, because you’re a product of your times.

Otherwise, he did seem to really like and enjoy pregnant women and supported them in ways other medical men of the time did not. So- another pass for him.

Loved the “fear-tension-pain” analysis he put out there and that made a lot of sense and can be applied to probably a lot of other areas of your life, not just labour. Best takeaway from this one!

It was okay, very outdated and there are much better books to read.
There isn't any reason to fear childbirth and when it was written, it was quite revolutionary to actually be informed about childbirth.

Quite informative in the benefits of relaxation in childbirth and the stages of labor. His stories from the births he attended are interesting and helpful.

I can only speak to the first edition. It was a little textbook-y at times, but an absolutely wonderful book for all soon to be moms to read!!
