"My struggle wasn't unique by any stretch of the imagination, but it was silent." -Angel G. Henry, Dents in the Ceiling
Dents in the Ceiling is a first-hand account from more than 30 women of color working in tech and Corporate America about their experiences navigating sexism and racism, forging allies, and rebounding resiliently throughout their careers. Through the narratives, Angel G. Henry affirms women and helps them reclaim their voices. Dents in the Ceiling is a playbook for emerging minority women in tech and assists active allies with tools to break non-inclusive corporate norms.
For the last several years, I have been regularly reading books to improve my understanding and approach to diversity in the workplace. This journey has led me to a variety of books that have had an impact on my attempts to be a better teacher, coach, mentor, and dad.
Angel G. Henry's new book Dents in the Ceiling has been a tremendous stepping stone on my journey. My biggest takeaway from her book is that the journey of a Black Woman is very different from a journey of not only other women but also of Black Men. Angel shares stories of how Black Women not only don't always have allyship with White Women, but they might actually make a Black Woman's journey harder.
The part that was most powerful for me as someone trying to support others is that almost every chapter has an Active Allies action section. Each of these parts gives potential Allies actions that they can take to support their colleagues and friends in the workplace and in life. I found this tremendously helpful and they will be my go-to when I'm trying to be supportive in a situation.
The other point that is vividly clear is that Angel is a student of her profession. If you just created a list of the books, articles, and TedTalks cited in this book, you would have a year's worth of learning to explore. This is a Professional who does the work.
The journey to Allyship never ends and Angel gives us one more milemarker to refer to.
