It's pure Deadpool. Do the stories make sense? Not much. Are they fun? Fuck yeah 😂
Very good first issue. I like this one a lot better than the Wolverine BWB series. The artwork by different artists really suited the storylines, the jokes and puns were corny as always but they made me laugh. Glad I saved this one to read on my birthday!
Like the title says, the artwork is black&white and “blood” (red) all over. This issue has three short stories, by different artists and writers, different styles. The stories themselves are light, but the usual (dark) humour prevalent in other Deadpool comics were a bit lacking. I enjoyed them despite that.
"Red All Over" by Tom Taylor & Phil Noto - Deadpool and Honey Badger team up to take down a zombie virus that is being tested on zebras. It's a slight story with decent artwork from Noto, but a charming addition to those who've enjoyed Taylor's All-New Wolverine run.
"Hotline to Heaven" by Ed Brisson & Whilce Portacio - Deadpool is hunting down a copy of the Bea Arthur film Hotline to Heaven which turns out to be a bloodier mission than he expected. Portacio leans into the '90s gritty aesthetic here to pretty great execution.
"Born in the Uszorsusr" by James Stokoe - A fairly funny story about a new nation forming within the boundaries of Canada. Omega Red turns out to be the culprit here and Deadpool comes into figure out what's what. It's great for the Canada-centric gags and the mild satire of old school Red Scare hysteria. Stokoe's artwork is always stunning, though I'll admit I struggle to appreciate the coloring at times. The black and white portions were diluted by the excess use of faded reds used for shading, making it a bit more challenging to appreciate Stokoe's sharp linework.
The first story with Deadpool and Badger was fun, plus it was Tom Taylor and Phil Noto working together. Excellent. The second story was the least amusing for me, and the third was decent and had Omega Red.
Glad I read it, but glad it was on Marvel Unlimited and not a purchase.
This one I enjoyed. It was quirky and sharp and it jumped around, just like I expected Deadpool to do. I'm more excited about this series than I am about Samurai.
