David Mann claims that he discovered a gap between what we know from Lean books and what the Toyota Manufacturing System is. He calls this gap the “Lean Management System” and describes it as a combination of 3 elements:
• Leader Standard Work (the engine of the car)
• Visual Controls (transmission)
• Daily Accountability Process (gas pedal and steering wheel)

Even though any car will need more parts, the author added only fuel to the list above. Which is the discipline of management.

All that, the concept in general and each tool in particular, are well described in Chapters 1-5. Chapter 6 applies all of this to an office environment. Gemba walks, the role of the sensei, and leadership involvement are discussed in Chapters 7 and 8. Chapter 9 deals with the differences in managing an organization during and after transformation. Rapid problem solving and continuous improvement are covered in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 is about managing and engaging people and the lean tools needed for that. The last chapter deals with sustainability of implemented changes and is a summary of the book. In the end, you can find a glossary and appendices that can help assess the maturity of an organization as a whole based on the use of specific tools and approaches.

The book is very practical and shows many examples. Not the best read compared to some novels, but a must-read for lean and production professionals.

A decently written review of standard Lean ideas. Includes several useful worksheet templates for analysis of Lean systems. Would be good for someone with very little Lean background, but a little wordy as a review for more experienced Lean leaders.
