College Ready 2021 is an essential guide parents can depend upon to answer questions throughout their child's first year at college!
The first year of college is full of excitement and uncertainty. And this Fall brings additional challenges and stress. College Ready 2021 provides practical guidance on what should be done during the summer, during drop-off, and the first semester.
Chapters address top-of-mind concerns including packing, money, staying connected, promoting responsible independence and supporting academic success. Checklists accompany each chapter so you don't forget anything and don't do things you shouldn't! And the book is full of ideas on how to start those tough, but very much needed, conversations.
College Ready 2021 is edited by Chelsea Petree, Ph.D., who is the Director of Parent and Family Programs at the Rochester Institute of Technology. And each chapter is written by a university official, who works with parents to enhance student success at the collegiate level.
Chelsea Petree is the Parent & Family Programs Director at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Chelsea moved to Rochester in 2015 to establish the Parent & Family Programs office, including developing a comprehensive parent communications plan and implementing family events and engagement opportunities. She has worked to establish a "parents as partners" culture at RIT, increasing support of families across the institution.
Chelsea serves as the President of AHEPPP: Family Engagement in Higher Education, where she is proud to lead the organization and create new opportunities to support and build community with its members. Prior to being elected into this role, she was actively involved in AHEPPP for many years as a volunteer, member of the conference committee, webinar and conference presenter, mentor, and Journal and Insights Blog editor.
Chelsea received her Ph.D. in Family Social Science from the University of Minnesota in 2013.
Disclosure: One of my teammates wrote a chapter in this book! Still, my review below holds true.
This book is an awesome guide to what you may need to be thinking about as your student approaches their first year of college! The book tackles subjects sequentially in the order you may face them, so you can start reading the summer before college and read as you go, or read all at once to prepare. I especially love the closing advice and the conversation starters for each chapter!
This book seems to be a good fit whether you, the parent or family member, have college experience personally or not. I think it raises questions for the seasoned college parent as well as gives advice for parents of first-generation college students. It's also a great reminder that no matter what resources you can provide your student, what they really need is you. Here's a fav quote from the intro - "You need to trust in yourself, and all of the lessons you have provided over the past 18 years. It’s time to let them grow and take control of their own future. But parents—they still need you. They need your advice, your encouragement, your reminders, and your love."
This is the ideal companion for any parent facing the prospect of a new title as college parent! As with all things academic, it is best taken early and practiced often. The book is crisp and concise, with individually wrapped and perfectly portioned topics, arranged in a linear fashion for those of us who crave order! This is THE instruction manual for us as parents, but if you plan ahead far enough, I think it's worth having your college-bound kid read too so they have the same framework for understanding your changing role as a parent. Highly recommend!
